Re: Lies, D*** lies & Statistics

I agree with you Tom, that the system floats on money. It's a very similar concept to the "tooth to tail" ratio in other organized systems. One person provides a livelihood for ten others. Next time you see a doctor or nurse practitioner or physician assistant, aka the worker bees or sled ...

Re: Force To Open/Close A Blade Changes

Hygroscopic lubricant? You have the tools to adjust the action to your satisfaction at both ends and the middle. You can't be any better prepared for the trip with your knife(s) than that.

...the desire to etch as much of the blade as possible without interfering with the action. If you don't etch enough of the blade, the non-etched portion will stick out like a sore thumb. If you etch too much, you interfere with the action by etching the blade where the washers make contact. First,...

Re: Maxamet and Patina. Should I acid wash?

....The patina has worn away quite a bit over time with use. I think this is ideal. That the patination wears away means it's not a deep layer. Just enough to prevent rust but not enough to affect the working of a very small machine. You can always etch it again to cover up any thin areas. Incident...

Re: Maxamet and Patina. Should I acid wash?

Ferric chloride is the go-to stronger etchant for a good many knifemakers, printed circuit builders (Radio Shack) and copper artists (artist supply houses). The plus side is that it gives a darker etch to the materials in pattern welded steels. I cut mine down to 35% and that's still considered stro...

Re: Maxamet and Patina. Should I acid wash?

Before you think about any etchant, do the Flitz to remove the spots so the surface is uniform. Those spots will show up a little deeper after you attempt to etch the whole blade if you don't even them out a bit. Clean the blade with a solvent too, before the ACV, to remove any potential resists, ak...

Re: Heat treat problem?

Given this subject and the variables that have been discussed, there are way too many threats to validity to have a good discussion about just one of them. Yes, there are more variables that have not been mentioned. It is much much too easy for everyone to jump in and play the "What If game.&qu...

Re: I Tested the Edge Retention of 48 Steels

Well done Larrin. This is a very good addition to the body of knowledge. I'm enjoying the read. It's rare for a scientist to be swayed into writing about his emotional state during an experiment. Audio of the swearing part would have been quite entertaining in the appendices. Praise your wife for he...

Re: Para 3 Defect?

I'm sure that Sal & Co. have had plenty of experience with product liability for the tools they have built. That results in anticipatory engineering. This is based on a common ancient doctrine based on the following: "Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool." And: "If...

Also Duluth Trading Co. They have some casual lines that have an extra piece of material at the clip point on some pockets.

Re: Can't get no respect

Returning the blade to the factory is usually the best choice unless you're handy with self repairs. If they've seen it once already, that's the direction to go.

Re: Can't get no respect

Maybe the fitment between the guard/blade/handle. The fix may require something to take up that gap like a shim, or JB Weld or the like. The 2x4 is a good shakedown.

Re: All About D2 Steel - Development, Use in Knives, and Properties

Good job Larrin!

I can testify that D2 is an interesting steel to forge. Just because I can doesn't mean I should. There are more forgiving steels under the hammer. The CPMD2 could be a great steel with potential.

"Nothing being Everything" by Tony Parsons. A gentle old friend of mine thought I'd enjoy it. He insisted. He was right but it's not for the faint of heart. It's a book to be digested slowly.

....People are more likely to tell you where their favorite fishing spot is than to tell you where they pick morels. I met a guy who told me that he picks about 50 pounds each year and sells them. He brings his wife to help but he blindfolds her on he way there. :) ... I've known some old folks who...
