The SS Harpy uses just fine, the G-10 is just a little better. I have also used a SE Merlin for many years as a whitewater rescue knife, and the only thing better will be the upcoming SpyderHawk.

SS Harpy was my first hawkbill and second Spyderco knife (bought in early mid-eighties) - outstanding utility blade that can also be used for self defense if needed. I used it as EDC in construction and home improvement fields. Still have it - I use it as a sheath form now - but replaced it with the...

I've been using Spyderco knives for about 20 years now, mostly everyday utility, but some rescue (whitewater) and self defense. I also get to see and handle many different knives as a sheathmaker. In my experience, Spyderco has the best "bang for the buck", is always refining their designs...

Rger No. 1,

Contact me and I'll get you hooked up with a belt sheath for that Harpy. Security Sheath can be adapted to belt wear with paracord, but I do make a seperate model just for belt carry.

Anytime you are talking about deployment speed, you have to factor in the time it takes you to acquire the knife from wherever it resides (pocket, sheath, waistband, etc.) and then open it. Autos require the extra steps of locating, then pushing the button (locks are another) after drawing the knife...

G-10 Harpies are only in the serrated version. Glad to see that more people are getting thier eyes opened as to just how usefull a hawkbill blade is. Once you carry and use these for everyday utility, you'll be hooked (pun intended).

Brian,

I've carried a Harpy since they first came out in the early eighties (still have my first one), and don't recall any SS without the vent.

When you SpyderDrop a Mouse or one of the lighter handled/smaller Spydies, it is most important to grip the blade/hole very tightly. This will transfer more of the wrist snap to throwing the handle off the blade. Best done starting with knife in tip up position. Edited by - Mike Sastre on 9/4/2002 8...

The Cool,

Yes, I do neck sheaths for the Merlin, as well as most other Spydies. Used to carry a PE Merlin in a neck sheath as an "airplane knife" before 9-11. Should be available from SFO.

G-10 Harpy if you can find one. The SS version gets a little slippery when wet and the G-10 solves this while maintaining the heftier feeling. The Harpy blades are just a little thicker than the Merlins, so slightly more robust. All that said, I've used the Merlin as a whitewater rescue knife since ...

Brian,

Got one of the linerless Civilians in Gin-1 and one in ATS-55. Sold the third, so don't know what that was, but it did go to someone in your state. Glad you like your SpydeRench sheath!! Sending some more out to SFO any day now.

Hawkbill,

Without diggin' into the safe for a sure count, Ithink I've got you beat, I've got every variation of the Civvie including two G-10s without the liner (was travel EDC before the Matriarch came out). Count is at least twelve, maybe thirteen.

Interestingly enough, no one has mentioned Spyderco's fixed blade additions. The Perrin Street Bowie is a formidable piece for "social encounters" and can you imagine what can be done with a serrated Temperance FB?

I prefer the linerless G-10s also. Great for neck wear because of the weight. Used a linerless Harpy or Civilian for years as EDC 'til Spyderco came out with the Matriarch.

Dennis, The Perrin has a lower profile than the Temperance, so is a little more concealable. Ergonomics on the handles of both are excellent and they both manipulate very well. There are a lot of subtleties in the Perrin's design that become apparant as soon as you pick it up. It's "Street Stee...

The Harpy/Merlin was designed for cutting rope netting, webbing, etc. and would be my first choice for a sailing knife. I've been using a Merlin as a whitewater rescue knife for well over ten years, and the few times I've had to use it, it performed very well. The curved serrated blade gives you mor...

Samo,

Thanks for the mention!! SFO has them (only five left from the bunch I sent last month) and they are fitted with TekLoks for wear with different belt sizes. Looks like a breakfront, but pulls out the top.

Brian,

I'll try to send you a picture.

Paul, At one point in time there was talk of a Civilian Trainer, but don't know what happened with those plans. There definitely is a good number of people who would be interested in a trainer for either the Civilian or the Matriarch. Since the the blade shape operates in two planes at once, a train...
