Re: Dr Larrin Thomas' New Video on Knife Steels

Thanks for sharing the video. It was fun to make, and I think it is important to remember the people who innovated in knives and steel.

Happy Birthday Dr. Larrin S. Thomas,Ph.D. 🎉 I think I did that correctly 🤔 You sir are a Legend 👏👏👏
That’s right, Dr. at the beginning, Ph.D at the end. And Ph.D needs the period for the extra classy touch just like Cindy Crawford’s mole.

A frog keychain Sal owned inspired the idea: https://www.spydiewiki.com/index.php?title=C01_Worker

Re: Magnacut rust from pocket carry

Passivation is treating with acid to remove iron particles and to force the chromium oxide to form at the surface. The oxide forms on its own but passivation helps. It could be helpful but it doesn’t seem to be standard practice in the knife industry.

Re: Magnacut rust from pocket carry

In general optimizing for corrosion resistance is not at odds with optimizing for other properties. The main parameters that control corrosion resistance are austenitizing temperature and tempering temperature. Higher austenitizing temperature means higher hardness and higher corrosion resistance. T...

How long did you carry the knife before the rust appeared?

I only made it over to the Spyderco booth once during the weekend. I had a pleasant talk with Mike Janich though.
It was super cool to meet you in person. Thanks much for signing both of my books!

All the best,
Christian
Always fun meeting people

This thread is so old the Super X isn't even listed on the linked page anymore.

They were powder metallurgy high speed steels (non-stainless) of some kind. There are a lot of them that can do 66+ Rc.

Ehhhhi I liked the green ones, but hen so did everyone else. I don’t much care for their YouTube presence. I’m good on this one.
I haven’t been watching. What is so bad about their YouTube?

Re: Larrin's New Knife Steel Book!

We need more Amazon reviews, it’s a big factor for people purchasing that there are a lot of reviews. Maybe not enough people have read the book yet.

Re: Larrin's New Knife Steel Book!

If anyone is wondering whether or not this book is worth the price, don't. The sheer volume of info in this thing is staggering. It could easily have been issued in 3 or 4 volumes and would have been worth the current single price for each volume. I've spent just a couple of hours jumping around be...

Re: Larrin's New Knife Steel Book!

I got my copy today, have already read 70-ish pages into it. I am really enjoying the combination of metallurgist and custom knife maker biographies interwoven with the history of different steel type’s development. It’s written really well, and I am learning a ton of new information. Nice review. ...

There will be a signing event for the book at Blade Show in Atlanta on Saturday, June 3rd at 1pm at the Pops Knife Supply booth. There will be limited copies for sale there, but I would recom...
