I'm stoked. I know what this steel and heat treat are capable of. I believe Sal is in for a real treat when he puts it thru the paces. Looking forward to more updates as well.

Re: Building a Custom Knife for Sal: CPM S60V

First step as a handmade custom knife maker is to select a pattern, I've been designing a kitchen knife pattern that has the same line flow and ergonomics of my trapper knife pattern which a enjoy considerably. https://i.imgur.com/yD3X0ca.jpeg The steel is marked with Machinist dye and the pattern i...

Is this a folder or a fixed blade?
I'll leave the folders to Spyderco.

When Sal was testing my folding collaboration design I remember he said it cut his sushi well.

I think Sal needs a bigger blade for his sushi.

Building a Custom Knife for Sal: CPM S60V

Sal has mentioned many times the past experience with S60V/440V and the steel not being able to achieve a useable high working hardness and also being miserable to sharpen at lower hardness. It seems with CPM S60V, things have changed in recent years especially new batches of CPM S60V versus the ori...

Re: Visualizing the Tradeoff of Higher Hardness

Hi Steeltoes, Was if finished? Did you use it? sal Sal, I'll just make ya one and you can test it. Love to Shawn. Almost like a new steel, and one that I chose for our introduction of powdered metals into the production market. I'd like to pay for it or trade you something. If it works well, we mig...

Re: Visualizing the Tradeoff of Higher Hardness

Lets say the chart shows 500 Total Cards Cut for some particular steel. That is only 1.64042 feet. It looks like the stack of cards to be cut is being moved over a 1 inch area of the blade. Are they saying that that one inch of blade can only cut 1.64042 feet of card material? The area of the blade...

Re: Visualizing the Tradeoff of Higher Hardness

Hi Synov, Very nice information. Thanx much for the effort and for sharing. I noticed that you list S60V was listed at Rc 58.5 going up to 61. This led me to think that this is pretty much a digital conclusion? Is there any real world testing and results to this. I have a fair amount of experience ...

Re: MangaSlice - The Next Breakthrough in Knife Steel

Surely diaphanous scales will be available on the first sprint run with a whole new design coming out of Golden. But they can only heat treat the metal during an eclipse, so they have temporarily moved some equipment down to Texas in order to take advantage on April 8 and will do a mass one time ba...

Re: New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing

Convexity kills, A lot of edges aren't at the angles people think they are yet this "hidden" edge geometry plays a HUGE role in the durability, cutting ability and cutting edge retention differences even more than steel in some cases. This highlights the importance of testing with good con...

Re: Ok, could it be that LC200N fares better against Magnacut than some might think?

Hardness with good microstructure is an important factor for edge stability. It's not just carbide size, volume and raw toughness from lower hardness. LC200N will always be limited in strength especially in a production setting with the hardness being capped near ~60rc or less. MagnaCut will always ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

That makes sense, however, that doesn't change the accuracy of the observations. A smoother surface RA on the Spyderco fine makes more of the finer 5-10μm particles able to interact with the edge bevel. Great now my head hurts thinking about RA vs particle size. Would changing the RA on a stone wit...

Re: Anyone want to see Vanax in the salt series?

I think it's just wrong that Spyderco, the leader in steels for knives, is not producing a vanax salt series. I would like to design a knife and have them evaluate it for production. If a guy from California can take to market a vanax folding knife, Spyderco can do it better and cheaper, for sure. ...

Re: Corrosion and Edge Retention

An "edge" is thin, and exposed on both sides, so it it the first part of a blade to respond to corrosion. This was the main problem in trying to find a Salt Water Steel. Even with blades that are coated or chrome plated, the edge is sharpened so it is not protected by the coating or plati...

Re: MagnaCut Fine Edge Retention

Yes it does keep the finer edge longer than other stainless steels. It behaves similar to mid-high carbide volume tool steels in fact. However, for some reason, it does not respond the strop as well as other steels. Do not get me wrong stropping still works on it but not as effective as other steel...
