Topic: Knife Throwing for Self Defense

Just be aware that knives designed specifically for throwing are illegal in many jurisdictions, and are poor for utility use. Throwing ANYTHING at someone's face can be tactically wise, in that most people will try to protect their face. A totally legal improvised weapon that hits hard would be a sp...

Spyderco's sharpener will sharpen anything, but if the bevel on the blade is radically different, the sharpener will spend a LONG time removing metal without reaching the edge. Some manufacturers recommend a certain type of sharpener. Have you asked the maker of your knives?

My Military never bit me, but it may be because I didn't have it long before the clip's mounting holes were damaged when the clip snagged on some now-forgotten object. Other knives, however, especially in tip-up carry, have bitten me when I tried to reach past the knife to get to something deeper in...

Is brand loyalty the subject here? As I reach my forties, I have learned that brand loyalty can get way too too serious. I have an old Al Mar SERE folder from the 80's, and it is very well-made. I have also owned Spyderco products since the 80's, namely Police and Mariner. Both brands are of high qu...

I just received a sheath for my Gunting that carries the knife opened, made by Survival Sheaths. It is really nice, on par with Blade-tech or Skunkworks. Delivery was just a few days from the order being placed.

Just remember that laws can change every time a legislature meets. Here in Texas that's every two years. Also, court decisions set precedents that determine how a law may be interpreted. Butterfly knives, for example, may not be specifically named as illegal, but if the law says gravity knives or op...

My Skunkworks sheath securely holds my Gunting, and doubles as a great surface on which to snag the ramp for kinetic opening. A good stiff leather magazine pouch made for a Colt 45 pistol also works well, both to carry the Gunting and for opening.

Thanks for the welcome. I normally wear a sturdy belt, so weight is not normally a concern for me. I have a Skunkworks sheath, and when on a sturdy belt, weight is simply not a problem for me. Most of my pants are also heavily constructed. My handguns tend to be pretty heavy, too, by the way. The op...

Most of the custom collaborations over the years seem to have had limited production, and the same has been true with many of the others. If you really like a particular design, don't wait too long to act. If you buy one and really like it, try to get a spare or two, if its affordable.

BIG THANKS to Bram for the design of the Gunting. I have now ordered the training tapes, and eagerly anticipate their arrival.

On the other hand, it takes background to be able to appreciate design. None of my friends seemed to be able to appreciate my Spyderco Gunting, until I bought a trainer. Then they can safely be shown a few things, and the light bulb starts to slowly illuminate. I will admit that when I received my G...

Wearing a badge for 18 years in the big city, one loses count of all the ways a Spyderco has helped. I have not yet used it to cut someone out of a seatbelt. One I will never forget, though, is responding to a call in a tiny apartment and finding two rape victims, both of whom had been bound and gag...

Two knives, one on each side, is good. Make sure everything you carry is an old and familiar friend to your hands. Remain alert, to minimize the risk of being surprised. (Jeff Cooper's color code, "Condition Yellow&quot ...
