Jazzman, the Standard was my first Spyderco and is still one of my favorites. Now that I think about it I could have stopped buying knives at that point--it's probably the only knife that I need. History will show, however, that many more knives were "needed" after that fatefull day. <img ...

mpclb, while you're shopping around for your Military be aware that the older versions had an ATS-34 blade (versus the 440v blade on the current version). I prefer the ATS-34 blade on the Military--I may be wrong but in my mind the material seems "stronger." I believe most people really li...

I think aluminum would be a better choice of handle material than titanium. Aluminum would be easier to work with and cost less. Almite coating would allow numerous coloring options and would be slick and elegant. The titanium handles on the Lum did not result in a lightweight knife. Perhaps there's...

Sorry Samo, but I think a BM 940 was chosen for the expedition. (BM was one of the sponsors?). I think the Spyderco Military with serrated edge would have been a better choice; however, I guess everthing worked out okay and the climb was a success.

If I remember correctly, I think in "Delta Force Two" a bad guy uses a Civilian to cut off pieces of beef jerky. Only in Hollywood. Thanks for the list Joyce, I printed it out and will have it close to the couch for reference when channel surfing.

Congratulations v34. That's great. Imagine what a "big" gift would have been. Please don't take this as a "suck up" to Sal but I think the thank you's should go in reverse to Sal and Spyderco for having this forum where fans can communicate their thoughts and feelings about Spyde...

IMO, the marketing strategies are somewhat questionable for some Spyderco knives. Sometimes--as in the case of the Calypso Jr.--your options are either good quality blade (e.g., VG-10) paired with an "inexpensive" handle (FRN) or "inexpensive" blade (e.g., AUS-8) paired with a go...

The Native is a nice size for EDC; however, I don't carry mine because of safety concerns. The blade is oriented in the tip up position when clipped onto the pocket. The danger is that there is very little protection from the point of the blade by the handle. The locking spring on mine (might be an ...

Sal, it's nice of you to ask online Spyderco fans for their opinions on which models should be "retired." I was tempted to respond immediately upon reading the post but decided to wait awhile to let my emotions calm down before saying anything. (Engage brain before putting mouth into gear)...

Okay, I'll admit it--I have used Flitz on my knives (satin or stonewash finish blades only). A notice on the bottle says, "USDA Authorized for use in Federally inspected Meat & Poultry Plants." Does anyone know if this means that the knife is safe for cutting food after polishing with ...

Hi samo. I, too, often wonder how many were made and how many are in collector hands. I posted a question a long while ago asking if owners actually carry and use this knife. I also wonder about the extra maintenance required due to the many cut outs in the blade and the handle. Since it has less me...

I'll admit that the G10 Police allows the user a better grip and is lighter than the SS version; however, the SS version is alot more comfortable to carry than the G10 version. Since the knife spends more time riding somewhere in my pants/shorts pocket or waistband than actually being used, this is ...

They're both good hawkbill knives. I feel that the practical choice would be the G10 Harpy. It's sturdy blade, compact size and good grip is a combination that's hard to beat. I have 2 Civilians, 2 Harpys, 1 Merlin, 1 Matriarch, and 1 MT Kestrel--and my favorite carry is the G10 Harpy. When carried ...

I personally like the grip of the CF Civilian better than the G10 version. It may not be as durable as the G10 but grip-wise I find it more comfortable. For everday carry it is dressier than the G10 and easier on the your pocket or waistband depending on where you clip it. At around $160 - $170 (str...
