Re: "Climbing story" in the newest Spyderco Byte

I don't climb anymore, but was active as a rock climber and mountaineer from the 70's through 80's...in the Wind RIver Range, Alaska, Adirondacks, White Mountains, Shawangunks and a bit in Yosemite. I always had a knife on me...always. And once, on a climb in the Wind Rivers needed to cut and splice...

Re: S90V and S125V – History and Properties

Interesting list of custom makers who used s90v What are its advantages over s110v? Is it finer grained? The S90V came first of course so it wasn’t designed as an improvement over S110V. S110V has a finer microstructure and better corrosion resistance but more carbide. S90V has a bit better toughne...

Re: S90V and S125V – History and Properties

Good stuff, Larrin.

I had a custom Model 4 built for me by my late friend, knife maker "Kit" Carson, with S90V (then 420V) in the middle to late 90's. It was my very first custom knife...and holds pride of place in my collection.

Re: Does a ~$100 LC200N Pacific Salt 2 seem like an incredible value to anyone else?

I want to try out the steel...but it's not yet enough of a lure. Almost...but not quite there for me. The price is relatively attractive, though.

Re: What’s up with the military?

Military in 4V would give me an opportunity to carry a steel I've not yet had the opportunity to try out...and a new Military would be a welcome addition.

Re: Grail Achieved! M4 Shaman!

Excellent! I know that M4 Shaman feeling. The fellow on BF who sold me mine BNIB (I’d been shut out on BHQ) knowingly asked only MAP. That surprise made my experience all the sweeter, but I would have paid way more. I'll see you and raise you...I got mine, RIT dyed to a Royal Blue-ish, but otherwis...

Re: I really want a Shaman in M4!

I have found Rex45 to be FAR less corrosion resistant than M4. I love M4. But, I can't even carry Rex45, without it turning orange. I had found the opposite to be true, but was informed by Larrin that there should be no reason for a difference in corrosion resistance between the two steels. He said...

Eventually I'll pick up one of their offerings in 4V. Last time I got booted in the middle of checkout. C'est la vie.

I'll also look forward to adding some 4V when the opportunity presents so I can compare with my 3V and Cru-Wear.

Re: Where's the 3V?

While 3v may not be thee optimal folding knife steel, most aren't. Some steels are better for specific applications, but a good numbee of blade steels are simply outclassed by one steel or another, yet we still see a wide array of options. Knife enthusiasts like variety. 3v is absolutely good enoug...

Re: Where's the 3V?

Another fan of 3V. I only have one, a small utility fixed blade made by Ed Schott for me years ago...but it's my most used knife around the house. Easy to sharpen, tough and not a hint of oxidation.

If Spyderco puts 3V in a pattern I like, it's something I'd look forward to.
