Very little play in mine when locked in the open position (there is play, but the lock engages under a bit of tension in the hinge that resists being open wide enough for the lock to engage...as the hinge wears, I would expect more play to develop). I am not sure if this is clear...if you open mine ...

To me the perfect desk knife would be a Damascus Mule with a nice set of burl slabs pinned with some elegant mosaics. I would have a wooden base that holds a nice roller ball pen on the right side and the knife in the left side (a nicely milled slot that supports the knife with a cantilever such tha...

All BS aside , on a lot of my blades I test sharpness AFTER I cut a piece of wood. On my choppers, sharpness is only important after they have chopped a few boards. On my smaller daily use knives, I cut through a pine 1x2. If the knife is still sharp enough to shave afterward, I have demonstrated t...

Different methods for gauging different blades.

Because some are used very differently, the way I check them is also different.

In order for a blade to pivot there must be a tolerance (small amount of "play"). The size of this tolerance is (supposed to be) controlled by the manufacturer (quality control). Various individuals have various sensitivities toward this tolerance. Some report "no blade play", bu...

Surefire E1B is carried all the time. I probably use it more during the day than during the night. It is small, powerful and oh so useful. It is perhaps MOST appreciated when someone drops something. It is surprising how much easier it is to find something that bounced into a dim corner (or is in th...

I think the OP was asking in regards to their actual situation and not a hypothetical one, as they have the actual knife intended for serrating already. *tosses in a pair of coppers* I realized what the OP was asking, but I would bet that by the time you ship the knife and pay for the services...yo...

I have seen the results of people trying to DIY serrations. They are VERY hard to do well because the angle, depth of grind, and spacing needs to be very nearly perfect or the whole job will look mighty bad, and may perform equally bad. Have you tried simply using a steep angle and a VERY coarse sto...

I am not judging anyone here... If anyone gets something that is under their expectations and wants to help the maker improve, they need to contact that maker (not a public forum that the maker may or may not have time to read). Additionally, they probably need to send the problems in so that the ma...

I hope to subscribe to your WIP thread. I think I would stick with your beautiful Ironwood scales without the bolster, but that's just me. I would agree on all points (though no one asked me, and my opinion really should not matter on YOUR knife). I would like to share a couple thoughts that may or...

The FRN should not govern the restIng position of the blade. This position should be governed by the kick located on the blade near the pivot. By this mechanism the edge is parked without contacting anything and therefore is not dulled in the process.

It is super-hard, and allegedly will rust (mine has only stained slightly, and has never rusted).

It is not magic, the edge will fail if pushed too far, but if you use it like a precision cutting tool, it can do some amazing things.

Ok, What do y'all recommend for VG10 30 or 40? Im not really sure whats in-store for it, its my EDC, so it could be anything from food prep, cutting open packages, cutting cardboard (sometimes, not that often), anything really that calls for it. As I said earlier, I would probably recommend somethi...

I tend to run my VG-10 blades well below 30 degrees inclusive, but the way I use my knives and the way others use theirs may be very different. The only way to know for sure is to use it the way it is and gauge its performance to your expectations and then make the desired changes. The responses you...

I think something in the middle of the road is ideal. We can have all the edge stability in the world, but if the blade gets butter knife dull after a few cuts it's not much good. Also on the other end, if the edge falls apart chipping out, rolling, flattening ect that's not much good either. That'...

No doubt in my mind CPM-M4 will put up with a huge amount of abuse and still shave arm hair, etc. This is a video I did a while back of a practice session I did with a chopper made of CPM-M4. You will have to take my word on the matter that I did a LOT more than what is shown in the video prior to t...

I would say it depends on what you like, what you intend to do, and how you maintain your edges. I find that edge retention is not THAT important to me as I am more prone to regular maintenance and prefer a screaming sharp refined edge. For these reasons CPM-M4 is my choice. I can take it camping fo...

I have never had a lock issue with a Spyderco. Admittedly I rarely rely on a lock or I switch to a fixed.

One thing I will say for sure. A strong lock on a knife with bad ergos will NEVER fail for me (because it will never see use on my hands ;) ).
