Re: Looking For Tips to Darken Micarta with Oil only
Linseed oil and tung oil will work satisfactorily and will dry so it won't stain your clothes. Drying can take days, or as much as a week. Apply sparingly, and wipe off as much as you can. Then set the knife aside until this time next week. Both oils have a distinctive aroma.

Re: Upping the price.
Only minutes ago I was over at the mountain bike forum. A couple guys over there are complaining about the high prices. Think about how bad it must be for people who play with both knives AND mountain bikes!

Re: Upping the price.
I know, right? Spyderco's prices are absurd. That's why they can't sell any knives. They have so much excess inventory that all hourly employees have been cut to three-day work weeks. I hear it's so bad that the new building next door is being converted vollyball courts. Renting out the courts will...

If you draw a graph showing the strength of the knife blade along its length, you'll see that as you get closer to the tip, the strength approaches zero. There are only a few choices available: bend it, chip it, wear it away, or don't use it.

Re: Knife Missile, the Hellfire R9X...!
The bigger question is when the Hellfire R9X Sprint with Magnacut blades will drop. Hopefully Kristi will give us a heads-up. Personally, I can't wait to test how the brown Sharpmaker rods work on the six blades. How many Al Qaida leaders will it slice through before becoming dull?

I wouldn't consider Chad Kelly Just "a guy from California." I'm just a guy from California. And while I don't own a race car, I sometimes drive my truck over the speed limit. Last week I was hacking away at what was to become my dinner using one of Chad's knives. Although I've had the kn...

Re: Vote: Kick? Choil? Forward? Other?
The Native 5 without a choil would offer a longer cutting edge and a good sized grip area on the actual handle That is true. But for me, and maybe for the designers, there is another consideration. The main reason for the pointy blade is not slicing cardboard and wet rope. It's for poking things wi...

Re: Vote: Kick? Choil? Forward? Other?
I find a choil to be necessary on a tiny knife like the Dragonfly or Native 5. I never use the choil on the Manix 2, but integrating a kick might negatively affect the aesthetic appeal of the knife. I'm happy the way it is.

I don’t really want to drop $250 on these Edge Pros I hear about I might get a Sharpmaker. I did find a “Crock Stick” sharpener in my sharpening box. Neat. I bought a "Crock Stick" sharpener in the early 80's. It preceded the Sharpmaker, but Sal and Gail improved upon the idea. I still ha...

Re: Frankenscope
I have a variety of magnifiers. For everyday sharpening, I don't need anything. But if I'm getting serious, I like to wear a 4x OptiVisor. It's low enough that I can keep it flipped down while working, but if I need to walk around, I can flip it up. Microscopes and higher magnification is just for p...

I'm jealous of you guys with your fancy scanning electron microscopes. I have neither the budget nor the space for such contraptions, so I've tried to be content with my $40 Amazon USB scope. A couple weeks ago, I spotted a binocular microscope that my buddy had. He handed it to me and said it was ...

Will I be working in the yard?
Working in the garage?
Doing everyday stuff?
Going out to dinner?
Having sushi?
There is a different knife that is best suited for each task.

By my rough estimation, I spent enough last year for Sal to upgrade that old corporate jet to the latest Gulfstream.

Re: How many Spyderco Knives did you buy in 2023?
I don't really keep track, but I'll try to remember.
Delica SE K390
Endura SE K390
Stretch 2 XL Cruwear
Manix 2 15V (two knives)
Paramilitary 2 15V
Mule Team REX T15
But I decided that I didn't want PM2 and the extra Manix, so I dumped them.
That leaves a net gain of 5 knives.

Re: GP knives Manix exclusive
Everyone says they're close but I've had K390 roll where Rex 45 chipped. I also think that K390 holds the edge longer. I've got 3 K390 knives and two in Rex 45, pretty light use all around. I do still like Rex45, just not as well as K390. You're right: K390 is better at everything... at least from ...

Re: Vote: Kick? Choil? Forward? Other?
Although I voted for the Choil, it really depends on the knife. I'm a big Manix 2 fan, but I don't use the choil. If you were to get rid of the choil, so many other things would have to be changed that the knife would no longer be a Manix 2.

Re: Corrosion and Edge Retention
It's how you frame it. You say you got pockmarks. I say you very cleverly figured out how to make micro serrations. It's a little-known historical fact that the inventor of blades with scallops, Henry J. Serration, was an electrician by trade. His brilliant invention was the result of a serendipito...

Re: Corrosion and Edge Retention
Last year I tested edge degradation over time on a Maxamet blade and found zero difference using my homemade BESS tester. The results were posted in another thread that may or may not be found using the Forum's search function. Of course the edge quality will be negatively affected from corrosion, ...
