Re: Science of sharp 15v analysis
What did you think about the images? The images are excellent as usual from Science of Sharp. Always particularly interesting to me is the sectioning of the edge by focused ion beam, and more recently the elemental analysis by EDS. This photo set and its subject steel might be the most captivating ...

Re: Please show some love for the Gauntlet
The cbn stone for the Gauntlet also feels more aggressive to me than the Sharpmaker’s cbn. Could be that the sharpmaker cBN you have is more worn. Fresh, new electroplated coated abrasives will be more aggressive out of box and will fade with use until needing replacement. You right, mine are worn....

Extraordinary images by Todd Simpson.
And that was an excellent analysis by Dr Larrin.
What a fantastic treat for us all.

Re: New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing
I found this fascinating like the rest of you. My guess is that the carbide banding can vary greatly from blade to blade, thereby affecting perceived performance. One person may get the banding close to the edge while someone else's blade may have it far from the edge. Anecdotal reports would vary ...

Re: Delica 4 in 2024?
Fun fact, if you clean your VG-10 Delica 4 blade and angle it in the light just right. You can see the chromium carbide banding flowing parallel with the blade. Thank for the explanation! Someone pointed that out about VG-10 a long time ago and I've wondered why it looked that way ever since. That'...

Exactly. These types of insights are only obtainable by careful testing and measurement, not from so-called "real world" impressions, opinions, accepted narratives, conventional wisdom, and anecdotes. Since the beginning of science, detractors have been throwing mud at laboratory experime...

Hi Larrin, Nicely done. Thanx much for the effort and for sharing. sal Not Larrin. Deadboxhero. ;) :open-grin Well, he's not wrong Doc 🙂 I was sharing Dr Larrin's Video, I made this thread to share what excited me specifically about the lastest testing which was the carbide banding behavior. Knife ...

Re: New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing
Than, not then. Thanks for that. I find it a little surprising. What could be the reason? Are the long carbide bands acting like serrations? We must understand carbides are harder than the surrounding steel matrix. The areas of carbide banding also have a higher volume of these harder particles tha...

Re: New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing
The information about banding is fascinating! It was also very interesting to see where 8Cr13MoV landed on the charts. I had assumed 8cr13MoV would perhaps do better on CATRA then it did given the larger carbides and more carbide volume. That's always the best part about testing, expectations versu...

Re: New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing
Always felt Spyderco's 8Cr13MoV was a tad bit underrated. I don't feel like my opinions have changed about 8Cr13MoV. It grinds easy but it doesn't apex as well as other steels. I did feel the testing put other steels in a better light rather than elevating 8Cr13MoV. 14C28N looks even better now.

New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing
https://youtu.be/h7i3q1fHXNs?si=Xqavyk7Kq14wM1Jd Dr Larrin did some extensive testing on 8Cr13MoV which helps put this budget material into perspective in its capabilities compared to other materials. While there was lots of talk about real world testing being more important than controlled testing...
