Re: What's the lowest edge retention steel you'd carry?

I like Spyderco's 8cr13mov. But anything worse than that, forget about it. And that's the overall standard, including secondary carry's. For my primary carry, I'll settle for s30v but prefer something better. I often consider toughness more than edge retention. If I had my way I'd always use very to...

Re: Thinking about the Shaman

S30v is different for different runs and brands throughout history. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not. With a knife design like the Shaman, wanting something other than spyderco's s30v has nothing to do with being spoiled. The model is meant for something different.

Manix 2 XL and byrd cara cara 2 stainless. But I'll be going through most of my knives today and touching them up if necessary. I have a feeling the Ti/CF military will be in my pocket by the end of the night.

Re: What's your trick to remove a wire edge?

As a beginner, I almost recommend embracing burr formation and learning how to deal with it (eliminate it). A burr along the entire edge lets you know you've fully apex'd that side of the bevel. As stated above, very light passes. On a larger burr, you can do something like 3 on each side, then 2, t...

I get that manufacturing capacity is a thing, but it's amazing to me that we've not had a single Shaman sprint yet. M4. PLEASE M4.
GREAT choice Nick. Can't go wrong with M4.

Re: Thinking about the Shaman

I wish we’d stop looking at steels as a price point kind of thing. I think it’s counterproductive. I normally don't (for lack of a better word) complain about pricing, but this particular model begs for a different steel IMO, and the price would be much more justified if it had such a steel. I thin...

Re: Thinking about the Shaman

If only spyderco hadn't raised the price so substantially... I remember when the Shaman was $149.95 on Blade HQ. Had it stayed around that price I think it would have sold like crazy. The increase to $180+ was a deal breaker for a lot of people. But it's arguably worth that much considering everythi...

Re: Thinking about the Shaman

Spyderco would be making a mistake to discontinue the Shaman. If it isn't selling like they hoped, it's for a few basic reasons. 1. Price for s30v 2. Not enough people know about this model. All you'd have to do is get more people to hold that knife and it'll make them want one. I would LOVE a Shama...

Re: Knives you wish you could like

I really wish I could like Manix LW models since I would have finally experienced Maxamet many months ago. But since it has pinned construction, no liners, and the FRN feels like you're holding sanded Lego's, I just can't bring myself to do it. I don't even think I'd pay $100 for one (taking resale ...

Re: Very Disappointed

So, unless the OP comes back on the thread, we (not me but some might be) are left with a thread where a first time user who reads the first entry gets the impression that Spyderco has a quality problem which looking at experienced "tinkerers" they don't. Yeah... Honestly I'm very surpris...

Re: Very Disappointed

I have never had an issue with any spyderco screws. Push HARD into the screw and apply pressure gradually and smoothly. Haven't stripped one yet, even ones with various types of loctite.

Re: Steel Testing YouTube Videos

So carbide tearout is real. After all these years. Yep. What people need to realize is just because someone claims carbide tearout exists, doesn't mean they're claiming it's a huge issue or that it must be avoided in order to obtain a very sharp edge. There certainly is a difference between an edge...

Re: price increase?!

I live with the prices. Nobody forces me to buy anything and crying about it doesn't change anything. Speak with your wallet and that's all there is to it. What bothers me the most is how so many awesome models are coming out and getting discontinued due to poor sales. So you cry about poor sales b...

52100 should handle anything and everything you throw at it in sharpening without any issue. Something is up.

Is it new?

I'd love a sprint manix XL. Frustrating seeing the mini versions of knives get 10x the sprints as ones that fit my grip.
The Manix XL feels SO GOOD in normal hammer grip, or hammer grip w/thumb ramp. Very good ergos there.
