I agree that the XL is without question too large for EDC. I wear jeans to my office most days and I would have no problem carrying a Manix 2 XL everyday, and I have a Military in my EDC rotation as well. Knives like the Manix 2 and Para 2 work just fine for me weekdays so I don't need to carry a l...

If you are talking about the Plano 3700. Plano makes several different cases that will hold and stack multiple 3700's.

I wanted something fancier but I finally bought one of these (Plano 3700) at Walmart to function until I find something better. It easily holds 16 knives of the size of the Military or Manix 2 XL. Except for thicker knives like the Vallotton it could probably hold 3 per compartment or 24 total. For ...

made some mule chili today

Well the chili is made with beef, the mule was the knife that I used to cut up the beef. In this case I used my XHP mule and it worked great.

Like someone else said, possible batoning. But it doesn't have to simulate anything. Just as guns are tested caked in mud or under water even though the probability of them seeing that actual use is slim, spine-whacking is just one way to see the overall toughness of a knife. I think people have pe...

People have different reasons for why they carry one way or the other. If I'm going to carry a one-hand opening knife I want to carry it in the manner that makes it fastest, easiest and safest to draw and open, so I carry tip down. I have some knives that are tip up and I do carry them in my rotatio...

I have a Leatherman Skeletool that I like, and for some people it could replace carrying a separate knife. I don't carry it much because I have too many nice knives that I want to carry. I also have a Leatherman Charge and I think it is a great tool. It could also replace a normal folding knife but ...

The most recent PM2, Mil and Manix2XL sprints have taken more than 12 months from announcement to the time when they reached users. I'm not aware of any that have been announced that haven't been produced yet, so if one were announced now it probably wouldn't arrive before the end of 2014. I have no...

I like the looks of the Sage, I think it is the best looking Spyderco design, but it is too small for me. I think a Sage 3.5 would basically be the Manix 2, and I like that knife and size.

Topic: What is the purpose of a lockbar cutout and why are they so thin?

The thickness of the milled section of the lock bar is a fine balance of strength and ease of use. Obviously the function of the lock means it has to move a certain amount during use, and the user has to be able to move the bar with his finger. From an engineering standpoint the properties of the b...

I think we will have better knives in 10 years. I don't know what they will be but they certainly could be Spyderco. Maybe 18-20 years ago I bought my first Spyderco, a Goddard. Then I moved to a Benchmade AFCK and Benchmade Leopard. The Benchmades were good knives but now I have Benchmades in my co...

It is beneficial for some of us to have a list otherwise we would not remember them all. A big help for me is to write down how much I paid so I will know in the future if I intend to sell something.

I don't think you can go wrong sticking only to Spyderco. As a zealot though I have to still sway from the brand occasionally. Certainly you should be careful with the model/brand. Bang for the buck it's tough to beat em :) . Spyderco makes a lot of different products, with a lot of variety. I thin...

Well yes and no, more yes than no though. I was buying 440C knives a long time ago and then the better brands and the custom knives started being known for ATS34 steel. Well now we are better than that with S30V, and much better with steels such as M390. I have read of people that did a lot of cutti...

There is a lot of discussion and opinions involved in sharpening. A lot of people talk about sharpening to less than 40 degree angles, and you would think that you could get an edge that would slice better that way, but it is difficult to actually quantify and prove this. You can get a pretty sharp ...

Mule scales are usually held on only by the bolts and not with adhesive. This makes them a lot harder to make because you have to shape the scales without the benefit of the assembled knive to hold onto. The first suggestion I will make is to take narrow strip of cardboard, fold it down the middle, ...
