Re: CPM Cruwear chipping?
I'm interested in this topic, because I do some machining. As I understand it, flooding with coolant lowers the temperature, but it doesn't necessarily mean that there is no heat . You are correct. Alas, my knowledge is only enough to get by... barely. When cutting metal, whether it's with a high-s...

Re: CPM Cruwear chipping?
It's time to sharpen that blade. I'm not trying to be critical, but there are certain truths about knives, and it doesn't matter how you use the knife or what kind of fancy steel the blade is made from. "There are those who sharpen their knives frequently, and those who cut with dull knives.&qu...

Re: Flashlights
I have some high-zoot flashlights, I've had some junky flashlights. Generally, the junky ones just go in the trash. I have flashlights throughout the house and garage. The one shown below is the BEST of all of them. My #1 criterion for a good flashlight is the switch needs to go off and on. That's i...

Re: DIY Swedge/False Edge on a Manix?
Ahhh... you mean doing it by hand? That kinda makes sense... except for the drudgery. When I first started reading your post, I couldn't think of a convenient way to get it done on a power grinder. As I type, I'm looking at a Manix 2 (swedgeless) and a Native 5 (avec swedge). A swedge on a Manix 2 w...

I've never heard of such a thing, but google served up a couple images. What a cool contraption. Sure, modern computerized machines can churn out nice work, but antique machines are just FUN.

So it's an ancient knife that's in new condition? How cool is that?

Re: Subjective Question
I didn't answer earlier for two reasons:
1. I'm not the grammar police.
2. Everyone knows it's the Manix 2.
Happy Mother's Day to all you moms!

Re: Why all the excitement?
It seems more patina resistant than K390. That's the only honest comparison I can do from recent experience. I've been carrying the 15V M2 since it dropped, sometimes not cleaning it immediately after use, and so far the blade looks like new.

Re: 15V, after the mule, what's next?
I'm hoping that 15V becomes to Golden what K390 is to Seki. That makes a whole lotta sense. For my purposes, K390 outperforms all the other steels I've dabbled with. Then BBB15V comes around, and it seems to be just as good. I don't use them equally. The K390 gets a little harsher use because I kno...

Re: The "factory edge" discourse
There's an interesting article on Science of Sharp that talks about subsurface damage from various grits. 320 grit was capable of disrupting the microstructure 1.5-2 microns below the surface. Holy smokes! Those pictures are way cool. They might explain some of the phenomena we experience. I have t...

Re: The "factory edge" discourse
Since Rusty is a machinist, maybe he knows the answer: Does coolant hold the ground edge at near coolant temperature? How hot does the apex get under coolant? I'm no machinist. I bask in the brilliance of the true artisans--sort of like the moon looks bright at night, but the real light comes from ...

Re: I'm having a Multitool midlife crisis
Quite a coincidence you'd start this thread. After years in a box, yesterday I brought out two old multitools I used to carry daily at work. I don't carry one any more, and I was trying to think of how I could put these to good use. Face it, most multitools are pretty similar. They all have a pliers...

Re: Simply Rugged Tom Threepersons
There's just something really special about a nice leather holster (especially basketweave )& and old revolver. Right? It's funny because no one can see my holsters when I'm wearing them. I can't even see my holsters when I'm wearing them. But wearing a nice holster makes me happy. I suppose it...

Re: Spyderco hardware origin.
Spyderco's fasteners are very strange. The company makes great knives. Their blades are great, their locks are great, their handles are great. Their fasteners are... not so great. Look no further than the clip screws on the Dragonfly. Even the screws on my 15V Manix are deformed. We talk about how i...

Re: Stuck screw
Was it a GOOD wrench, or one that comes from a country that routinely dumps trashy products on our shores? Make sure you have a GOOD wrench, and then heat the threaded side with a hairdryer. Don't go crazy; you don't want to goof up your optic. Maybe go 180 Fahrenheit, max. If you can put your finge...

Re: so... next reveal?
Rusty good for you ! I gifted one to a good friend for a Kapara . Have to watch them , they tend to come off over time from his experience . That was a concern, but hasn't been a problem thus far. I made mine as big as possible within the cutout on the scales, and left even more material on the ins...

Re: so... next reveal?
That sounds amazing! Any chance of a photo of your mod? Sure. I started a thread on it a while back. I'm glad you asked, because re-reading it reminded me of subtleties I had forgotten. I'll probably make another for my PM2 15V some day soon. The next one will likely be metal so it will match the h...
