Re: Spyderco Hatchet

The poll is definitely hardened.

I don't have the specifics, but I'd go out on a limb and assume that the HRC values of the Velvicut line are a good ballpark number.

Re: Spyderco Hatchet

As I've been involved in this project, I want to touch upon some of the concerns that were raised. The objective was a relatively lightweight tomahawk/hatchet hybrid that will fit a daypack and is capable of doing camp tasks and bushcrafting. - The grind on HatchetHawk prototype from the Amsterdam M...

Re: 4116 Stainless steel and Japanese AUS 8?

The performance of 4116 (or more precisely 1.4116) depends on good heat treatment, much like any other steel. With optimum heat treat it is easy to sharpen to a very keen edge and its edge retention is appropriate. From my experiences with some German kitchen knives as well as a Cold Steel Kudu, I w...

Re: Japanese Spyderco Purchasing?

There are Japanese knife stores, online as well as brick and mortar. You'll have no problem buying knives in Japan. Finding specific Spydercos is a bit trickier, but not impossible. The prices for Japanese produced Spydercos are often quite good. Carrying knives in Japan is another matter, entirely,...

Re: what would ancient people think of Byrd knives?

The Polynesians would be amazed as they didn't have steel or much in the way of mechanics. As for the others... Medieval Europe and ancient China were already pretty good at steel and knife production. Europeans and Chinese might have valued the stainless properties, and maybe the folding mechanism....

Re: Byrd Fixed Blade

I resubmit my design from page 1 :D http://www.spyderco.com/forumII/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=61881#p970183 I think a light knife in the 3.5" range with a nice sheath that can be used for belt (vertical or horizontal), neck or boot carry would be a winner. IMO, there aren't many high quality low...

Oh, the other one is by Laci Szabo? This is gonna be good... I can't wait to see his take on a tactical 'hawk or is it similar to the one above?

Re: How many of you own a Hungarian?

Does it have a lock? Well, it is a slipjoint mechanism, but the spring is extremely strong. It does stay open adamantly; the GF is not even able to open it. The blade moves quite smoothly once you overcome the initial tension of the spring and audibly snaps into position. You have to be very carefu...

Re: Byrd Fixed Blade

We already had a discussion on a possible byrd fixed blade some years ago. http://www.spyderco.com/forumII/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=39321" target="_blank I'd still like to see one, although now I'd go with a middle size between the Enuff and Temperance series. Blade length about 8cm with a ...

To revive a great thread, here is a shipbuilder's axe I made (except for the head obviously). http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv209/m21peace/ax1_zps0953132b.jpg This project was inspired by me having a Bundeswehr claw hatchet [e.g.] laying around which I found too heavy and cumbersome for a hatch...

I think with Victorinox it is mostly due to price considerations. Most non-knife people aren't even aware of the supersteels, they just want the functionality of a Swiss pocket knife. If Victorinox offered super steels the price would go up. As it is now, one can buy a two or three layer Victorinox ...

Re: Robustness With robust I meant that Aus-8 is a bit tougher - less brittle and more resistant to breaking if you will. While VG-10 is just fine for most folders and short fixed blade knives, Aus-8 is better for larger outdoor knives - that's basically what the heat treatment specialist from Seki...

No Sir!!! VG-10 is much, much better blade steel than AUS-8 IMO!!! It really depends on what you look for in a steel. Aus-8 easily takes a very fine, thin edge that is pretty robust. If you care more for edge-retention over sharpenability and robustness, VG-10 is for you. I remember a conversation ...

I handled one at the IWA 2014 and I like it. I was concerned about the "lockup" when I saw Wouter's pics, but the detent ball is doing a very good job.
