Re: Chaparral LW SE
Nice picture. I feel like Taichung, Golden & Seki's serrations are all distinctive, with Seki being the most aggressive, followed by Golden, and Taichung being the most subtle. Moki gets the award for most snaggled, LOL! If you ignore the snaggletooth portion of the Masa Ayoob blade, the Moki s...

I pretty much always use the choil. True or not, I feel I have better control of the blade this way.

Re: LeafJumper
To amplify and perhaps provide some useful information, the best slicing SE knives in my collection are the sheepsfoot Caribbean (15°) and the Massa Ayoob (20°). What these two knives have in common are very flat serrations (blade thickness, not pointyness, although that too). Similarly, the small s...

I just did. It slices through my wife's unsolicited credit card offers with less perceived resistance than when doing so with the Magnacut Native 5.

Re: I'm Going All In: Spyder Edge and K390
Don't mean to pile on, but I have to agree with Marius. I mostly sharpen my SE Spydies using the Sharpmaker, occasionally do it freehand using a Double Stuff 2, and I would expect them to cleanly slice through that belt.

Re: S30V, S45VN or S90V. Is one of these better?
Except most of us have neither the equipment nor the inclination to take these steels down to "very acute and highly polished edges." Whether they are brittle under those conditions is moot because 15 dps and a 320 grit edge serve our purposes quite nicely.

Re: S30V, S45VN or S90V. Is one of these better?
I own a number of knives, fixed and folding, in S30V from Spyderco, Strider, and White River Knives, as well as from several custom knife makers and have used those knives for close on 20 years. None of them have shown any tendency to chip in normal use, except maybe the factory edge on my Nilakka,...

Re: Why do knife enthusiasts frequently ignore kitchen knives?
I'm the one who cooks dinner for my family, but I find it hard to get excited about kitchen knives. I have a set of the kitchen knives Ethan Becker did with Esee, along with Dexter Russell boning and paring knives, that handle most of the day-to-day chores. Also a Nakiri that Dave Ellis sold under h...

Re: S30V, S45VN or S90V. Is one of these better?
They are all brittle, so that is a moot point. Please define brittle and tell us about your personal experience with S30V. Re: Are We Witnessing The Death Knell of K390 In Production Folders?
While it is true that the high carbide steels like K390 excel at staying moderately sharp/dull for a long time, and at more obtuse angles than the scalpels, they also serve a purpose. I have a Endela wharncliffe that I put a new coarse edge on 2.5 months ago. I use it almost daily to process the ho...

Startac? The Startac was one of the best phones (for the purpose of being a phone) I've owned. By the time I retired it to upgrade to a smartphone, there were pieces of the case missing from being dropped so many times; it had also been dunked in water once. Still worked just fine. Like the old Tim...

Re: C-60 Ayoob Campaign: No I Won't Shut Up
Anyone else reprofile the PE portion of the blade? Normally, I don't bother, but ~45° was just too obtuse, so I rubber banded my DMT extra coarse to a Sharpmaker triangle, put it in the 20° slot, and went to work (lot of work :hot-face). Ended up with a bevel just slightly under that, because the di...

Re: C-60 Ayoob Campaign: No I Won't Shut Up
What do you think makes them seconds? Uneven grind? I think mine’s weird serrations at the snaggletooth. Mine too, I can't find any other flaws. Holding the knife in hand, it becomes obvious what happened: the factory failed to account for the (short) distal taper when grinding the serrations.
