Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end
Looked at another way, the modern one-handed opening knife strives to be a fixed blade when open and a folder in your pocket. If one frequently encounters the need for one-handed opening knives in work, why not attach a suitable fixed blade to the ladder or toss one in the tool box? That argument d...

Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end
Let’s get way outside the the container for a moment. The year is 2031. The combination of shrunken government and advances in AI and nano-technology have brought us a completely malleable and reasonably intelligent base material substance, that can, when instructed, assume many forms and characteri...

Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end
I’ve heard biologists say that crocodylians haven’t evolved very much over the last few million years because they were already so well-adapted to their environments that new mutations were merely deviations from their optimal builds. I suspect that the contemporary folding knife is much the same. ...

FYI, here https://www.google.com/amp/s/blog.knife ... ade/%3famp
Is a good discussion of the origin of the Wharncliffe. The accompanying illustration shows early Wharncliffe knives being definitely sway back.

Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end
It’s interesting that the OP brings this up considering his critique of the Swayback. https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=87377 The OP says, “The Swayback was designed as a one-handed knife. It didn’t meet even that basic requirement.” I have a two-handed swayback slip joint which, i...

The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end
Every modern folder design must have these elements: bearings or washers of some type, an opening and closing mechanism that can be operated with one hand, a lock (in the majority of cases) that can be released with one hand, some kind of pocket clip, and a single blade. Battles rage about the best ...

If I was smart I’d buy all my knives in bright colors.
But, I’m not.

Re: What "Other" is in your pocket???
https://i.imgur.com/4iUSG5p.jpg Isn’t that a Great Eastern Cutlery Conductor? By the time I realized they had dropped, they were long gone. 😕 One of my friends is a Great Eastern Cutlery dealer. He got a decent number of Conductors in stag. I checked with him about an hour after he released them. H...

Re: Seconds Sale 2020
For a few people who don’t live close enough, or can not afford to travel, it seems (although things are not always like they seem) that getting a number of seconds through the post is a great idea. I think it is rife with issues, many of which will not appear until after the fact. Considering some ...

Re: Buying good knives twice
I have my eye on one. Again. I had one a few years back when I knew much less about knives than I thought I did. Seduced by more “modern” designs I let it go. But now, being older and I hope wiser I’m zeroing in on another.

Re: Gayle Bradley
I liked mine. The liner lock is solid and easy to open if you just take a bit of time to see that you have to get the edge of your thumb, or thumbnail on the release bar. Easy but very difficult to accidentally close. A design feature from Mr Bradley.

Re: Buying good knives twice
When doing the lockbar mod on the Chaparrel, does the spring reliably stay in the new location, or is it necessary to insert a spacer to prevent it moving back? It stays in place. It’s under enough tension so that it doesn’t move around. I move mine up as far as possible so that all still works as ...

Re: Talking about your traditional knives
Sadly, I lost my #92 Talon 2 weeks ago. That knife had a story to tell, not to mention thousands of hours of pocket time. I am pretty sure I left the slip laying on the checkout counter of our local pizza shop and obviously the next person in line liked it enough to keep it. When I went back an hou...

Buying good knives twice
It is probably just me and my inability to make good decisions most of the time. I have noticed that I will buy a knife and then after using it and keeping it and carrying it and really liking it, I somehow end up moving it along. Much later after due consideration and remorse, I end up buying that ...

Re: Talking about your traditional knives
I’m expanding my little collection (we knew it was going to happen didn’t we, Precious). Adding a Great Eastern Cutlery 62 Easy Pocket Congress in unicorn ivory, and a 33 Conductor (clip main with a pen secondary) in Sambar Stag. Photos later. Well, finances dictate otherwise. If anyone gets a Cond...
