I agree, but to make it legal in a lot of US metro areas you'd have to shave about a millimeter or so off. If it wasn't so close I wouldn't have bought one,
30 seconds with a file solves this kind of problem.

Re: The Astute

Hey does anyone recognize the clip pattern on the Astute? It’s not the Tenacious style. Its clearly from some other model because it has a hole for a lanyard hole that isn’t placed there.

Re: The Astute

Mine is a bit stiff to open, though it will probably break in with use. I took mine apart several times to tune the liner lock. I think that was part of the issue. The only real negative I can find is weight, I'd love for this design to be lighter. Someone out there skeletonized theirs with a drill...

Re: AI art knows Spyderco

So long as AI does not infringe (intellectual property; job opportunities), Job opportunities? Technology always eliminates jobs. Have you seen a car factory lately? It may create new job opportunities but on the whole it’s rare to see an increase in low skilled jobs when a technology takes hold. E...

Re: The Astute

One of the best designs to come out of Spyderco in years, and it's a shame it was part of the value line. It deserves a better steel. I dunno, it's been around a few years now so it must be selling ok. If it weren't in the Value line it would be at least $150 and probably would have shot its shot b...

The Astute

I posted about this in one of the recent mega threads, but it's pretty buried there and I've been carrying this for a bit and figured I'd start a thread about it. Ok, so this is a "small" knife in the value line. It's actually a 3" blade but the blade and body are quite narrow. In ter...

If your locale permits it, a fixed blade may eliminate your ergonomic struggles with locking mechanisms.

Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report

For everyone worried the Charisma will immediately shatter during use, that’s thicker than 3 disposable utility razor blades. It’s not something you’d sell at Walmart next to the Gerber machetes but as an enthusiast blade it should be fine.

What we see is what we’ll get. It’s a production sample; made in China with 8Cr13MoV.
Really? That’s… that’s just mind boggling. Who is buying a titanium handled knife with 8Cr?

The Ti certainly is pretty though.

Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report

While it looks cool, the RIL Tenacious seems like a knife that will miss some marks, based on 8Cr13 or D2 steel, non-deep carry clip and what I'd guess will be a over $100 price point. I don’t think the frame lock Tenacious is going to have a low end steel, there’s a whole thread about it where Sal...

Re: What is the best application to tool steel for long term storage?

I think sword people use wax based products. The chapstick idea above seems like it would work well.

Really anything that stays put and blocks out moisture and oxygen will work.

Re: Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2024 Report

Charisma certainly has my attention. I’ve been carrying an Astute lately and enjoying the slim longer blade. Charisma looks insane. The frame lock tenacious is certainly interesting as well. Likely not something I would purchase (my existing Tenacious is working fine) but I can see it being desirabl...

Re: Upping the price.

Up to this point I admit I have overlooked Coldsteel. Wished I hadn’t. Every time I hear people talking about Cold Steel knives I go look at them. Then I quickly close that web browser tab :). They just seem so wonky and cheap looking. But I can see the Bushranger is super contoured in the handle.

Looking at the Astute I'm noticing something that I feel could be improved upon. The edges look pretty squared off.
Some knives it matters more than others. I like the chamfering on the Astute and the Chaparral LW just fine. But they are tiny knives.

Im no pro, but I would doubt 300 degrees would temper steel in any away.
It really depends on the steel. It's at least low enough you wouldn't completely blow the temper on any steel.

Re: Upping the price.

I’m perplexed as well. I think maybe the Tenacious style construction is too familiar? I remember glancing at this when it was announced but didn’t really grasp how small it is. It’s definitely a good design. I don’t know if Spyderco will keep it in production. A different color G-10 would make it s...

Re: Upping the price.

Ok, here's another Chinese budget folder... but before everyone gets their pitchforks this is a Spyderco Astute :). These retail for around $60. Same Tenacious style construction, same steel, everything, just a different shape. I guess the main difference aside from shape is there's no jimping on th...

Re: Has Spyderco ever brought back a knife they discontinued? Not including dealer exclusives

I would say that's rather subjective. I am sure Spyderco brings new iterations of models to the market with also the intention of making certain features "better". This does not necessarily though has to be the case then for everyone. To me for example Stretch "1" and Millie &qu...
