Re: Steels and their Purpose

The analysis is fun to read and personal experience is cool. I just have a single input based on the OP's uses: Province in 4V for yard work and tough tasks. Best match of knife, steel, and tool design ever.

Tormek Sharpener

Wanted one of these for awhile. Could not justify the investment. Simple solution: stop trying to justify it. Did knock off a little expense starting with some Wen bits ($35 10" aluminum oxide wheel, $43 dollar jig set) added to the no-wheel-or-tools included Tormek T8 Custom model. Could keep ...

Re: So what's the top contender for all around "super steel" these days?

Magnacut sounds interesting and looking forward to it. But for now.. 4V in a Province is a great match of tool and steel. Whether on a camping trip or clearing brush, don't want to stop and resharpen. Working edges do matter. S110V or S90V around saltwater. My poor abused S110V PM2. Sand and salt. J...

Re: Sharpening stones

There are expert sharpeners on this forum. I'm not one of them so with that caveat... Nobody can tell you what will fit your 3D printed sharpener with AliBaba stones. The stones according to one buyer are 20mm X 150mm X 5mm so if there are diamond or CBN stones with those dimensions they might work....

I have a Para 3, Native LW, and a mule in Maxamet. It isn't just the tests you see online. In real use this steel is absolutely amazing.

Re: S110V doesn't "feel" sharp

Guess I'm in a different camp on this. I like S110V. It's one of the reasons to get a $180 Spyderco vs. a perfectly adequate $40 knife on Amazon. Started with a S110V Military then acquired a PM2 after I saw how it took saltwater abuse. Maybe it's because I sharpen on diamond stones but maintaining ...

Re: Rivers Edge Cutlery Upcoming Exclusive

Seems a Military in CTS204P with OD green G10 scales and an FDE coated blade would be possible from REC. But maybe a Shaman since it appears to be selling well for other dealers offering exclusives.

If you want something that inhibits rust, Ballistol, CLP, or FP10.

If you are concerned with contaminating food you cut, you might be using too much.

Re: Most Underestimated Steel.

When a steel falls from favor because there is a readily available better choice now on the market, it's not underrated. It is overtaken. You're implying that the consumer is not totally manipulated by the profit seeking motive of the market, which is of course false. None of the new steels seeking...

Re: Most Underestimated Steel.

When a steel falls from favor because there is a readily available better choice now on the market, it's not underrated. It is overtaken. As for underrated, if you follow the posts of Dr. Larrin, I think T15 could be considered to be in that category. Looks to be a good choice in terms of properties...

Re: Province or Bradley bowie

What do you plan to do with it? Province is larger and heavier. And should be more expensive. If it's for a camp knife and hard landscape use, the Province. If it's for hiking the bowie (or something smaller still). And if your local dealer has them for the same price something is amiss. Should be s...

Re: We already have the solution. Now what we need is to find the problem

While I don't look to do a cost/benefit analysis of a hobby, Spyderco has priced themselves into a higher end luxury category for most. I find my hobby proceeding in the sub-$50 category for folders. Surprising how good they've gotten.

Province.

Since it's all just home and garden, never knew I had so many tasks that a big knife would do better.

Re: Your "return ethics"?

You cannot dispute that returning something merely on preference drives prices up. A business has to pay for processing those returns and that cost gets passed along. So those that do this are, in fact, impacting the rest of us. And regardless of all the rationales, I find it to be an unsavory pract...

Re: Your "return ethics"?

While I agree that the vendor has a business plan that may include liberal returns and the buyer is only bound by the contract they entered into with the purchase, this has all, IMHO, pretty much gone south in the age of Amazon. Too often I buy an item from an online seller and it's obviously a retu...

Not sure what point the article is making but love the pictures.

As for Maxamet, I used my Mule to cut up boxes for hours. Had a mountain of them after a cross country move. All I can say is that whatever it is doing with it's carbides, it's doing it really well.

Smoky Mountain Knifeworks has the Sage 1 discounted to $115.37! Heck of a deal! Rich Too bad, I’ll honestly never buy from a retailer that sells items with confederate flags 🤷‍♂️ I'm sure that they're scrambling at this very minute to create a forum account whereby they can offer you a "specia...

Re: So what's your top 3 favorite steels? and why?

I'm not hard on knives and factory knives are less expensive than customs so higher end steels on my Spyderco's are OK with me. Maxamet S110V 4V (for those few applications where toughness actually matters) And while we're at it could we get some more 3D handles on folders? Micarta or G10 or stabili...

Yea.. pre-ordered the micarta/cruwear Shaman. Like I need another knife. How does Spyderco manage to keep hitting that one place where I can't resist?
