Re: Thoughts on Ankerson's cut testing results

Well I think the first post was meant to understand how steel could have lower rank in coarse edge rating then they were with the high grit rating when Jim is saying coarse perform better then polished for all the steel. I think he explain how and why it could happen. I was one of which who didn't t...

Re: S30V edge--what's your formula?

If you know how to avoid bitting in the film I would guess 50 uses on the 15um with each strip (200 for a full sheet), 75-100 for the others (300-400 per sheet). I haven't worn the abrasive on the 0.5um and 0.1um but messed them up with bitting on them with the edge. I did had the bad habit of using...

Re: S30V edge--what's your formula?

Well they won't last that long (for someone sharpening daily like you I guess), but for someone not being able to afford diamond stones like me I guess that's a good workaround. I bought my first kit 2 years ago and somewhat messed them because I didn't knew how to use them but they were still usabl...

Re: S30V edge--what's your formula?

More then enough. I usually sharpen my folder after 3 to 20 hours of work done with it depending on what I cutted. With my R2 kitchen knife polished with 0.1um I do about 40hrs cutting before sharpening. For kitchen knife I sharpen as soon as my knife start to slide on pepper or tomato skin. On my w...

Re: Proposal: Spyderco Midtechs

Not implying it wouldn't work. In terms of sale, I guess there would be buyers. I was refering about how Spyderco would handle that part, as I can't tell if they have the inclinason/time while still maintaining an ok margin of profit on those. Now as I said, if it work out, those would be great piec...

Re: Proposal: Spyderco Midtechs

At that point it wouldn't be easy for the folks to simply order a customization of their Para 2 to a custom maker?

Plus, that would be a lot of trouble for Spyderco to start customizing knife as demands vary so greatly.

My 2 cents...

Re: Thoughts on Ankerson's cut testing results

Just for clarity, feeling, smelling, seeing, or tasting a piece of steel won't tell you anything about them except maybe stainless vs non-stainless. Well that's a relief. I just spent all morning licking my various spydies and thinking there was something wrong with me because I couldn't tell the d...

Re: Paramilitary Pivot Design-Terrible

And in that analogy, if the person had gone into the sports bar and had begun a polite conversation with the others about how their team can improve, things would likely go very smoothly. The people in the bar aren't irrational, but they don't take it well when someone barges in and seems to attack...

Re: This Place Needs......

I'd get a ZDP endura with a SB ladybug. The ladybug being small and so thin you can get that SB blade stupidly sharp with no fear of ruining the edge since this small knife will see mostly light use. The ZDP endura is a beast you'll have much fun playing with. Simply avoid hitting rocks or metal wit...

Re: This Place Needs......

Would like to see some kitchen knives in Super Blue, ground really thin and in the higher hardness range, 4 to 6 inch blades would be nice. :) That. Oh and a nice chef knife 'bout 9" - 9.5" long. Custom maker is too much for my wallet, so I wanted to make one but could only find Blue #2 s...

Re: S30V edge--what's your formula?

Nope. Not the same. There might be other makers or forms, but that's the easiest to use I could find. I learnt about those lapping pad while working with some fiber optic splicer. They had various grit, with adhesive backing and without it. A few model they had wouldn't fit their new tool so he gave...

Re: S30V edge--what's your formula?

Where do you live?

Since I'm in Canada, I get mine from Lee Valley.

I cut them up into 4 piece 3/4" x 6" and stick them to small glass piece of the same size.

Re: When you give a Spyderco and it doesn't go as you expect

I did gift my bro 2 spyderco only to see what he'll tell me about it after much use (and I realized I had no use for fixed). He spent close to 3 years backpacking in various city/mountain/country from Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica. His favorite knife was a fixed he bought for 2$ at a lo...

Re: S30V edge--what's your formula?

Can't say for s30v but I mirror polished ZDP-189, Super Blue, S110V and 10V with diamond lapping pad on flat 3/4" wide glass. Bought the 4 pad package ( 15um, 3um, 0.5um, 0.1um) but most of the time skip the 2 last.
