Re: K390 PM2 | Testing

When the matrix is harder with hard carbides inside at high volume, it's a nightmare to grind and the abrasive cost goes through the roof, that's why it's so neat that Spyderco makes Maxamet so available, they deserve a great deal of respect for that. Agree. Also for the Mule Team program that ran ...

Re: Smith stones vs DMT stones.

Why are so many people recommending diamond plates for Henckels knives? These are probably 1.4116 steel at 57 HRC. Unless you need diamond stones for some of your Spyderco or or other knives, I'd get a cheap, simple stone. You can get a King combination stone (250 and 1K grit) that will sharpen the...

Re: Smith stones vs DMT stones.

Fair point, and I get it. But he has a $30 price range. You can get a double-sided diamond plate for $30, but it's not great. And surface mount course diamonds tear up an edge like crazy. For somebody starting out with stones I think king stones are a less risky way to go. Just my opinion, I could b...

Re: Unpopular Blade Steels That You Like?

Cast 440C 4V (maybe not unpopular, but not as popular as it should be) PSF27 PD#1 BD1 S30V VG-10 It's really been interesting to learn that the "Cast 440C" is actually considerably better than the regular 440C steel is. I've heard nothing but good about that fixed blade Serrata model whic...

Re: Q-Ball users?

I forgot I'd posted to this thread a little over a year ago. The Q Ball I ordered last weekend arrived yesterday. I'm not quite sure what to think of it yet. It's nice, but it isn't wowing me. What isn't wowing you? The knife overall? Blade? Lock? The ball bearing lock is a fantastic design (imo), ...

Re: More 4V anyone?

I have the Para 3 with 4V but I missed the others. My Mule with 4V has edge retention similar to my K390 Mule. It's great steel and I'd gladly take more of it.

Re: The Serrata - tell me about it

Agree on the handle. Been doing some rope cut testing. The Spyderco and the custom Serrata are two knives I can use for a long time with no fatigue. Not many other fixed blades are as comfortable for me.

Re: What's good about S30V

What would be the major malfunction if Spyderco switched from S30V to M390 for all of their S30V models? Would the knife cost $10 more? $20 more? I'll buy a Street Beat in S30V. I don't buy that many folders and when I do, I look for something unique. Seems like from all the controversy stirred up ...

Re: What's wrong with S30V?

"Horribly average." In what way? Is the issue that it's become common, and therefore probably less desirable? I would S35 over S30, but I like them both. I'm not sure if I sharpened and used both without knowing what they were I could tell the difference. In fact, I'm sure I could not. It ...

Re: The Serrata - tell me about it

I have one and have used it quite a bit. Design is great with a very useful blade shape. It's ok in the kitchen. Not a great slicer given the thickness of the stock. I could see using it to break down tough foods or some butcher tasks. I would baton it through chicken bones without hesitation. I fin...

Re: St Nicks Knives Exclusive 4V Shaman - Available 9/19/19

Can't believe I missed this one. Based on my Mule performance this should be a great blade. I'm getting K390-like edge retention from my 4V Mule.

Re: Edge retention, real use, edge damage

The right stones make touch ups faster. I can do ZDP or K390 in a minute or two if it's not dull and I can use one stone. If the edge is not in great shape that's a different story. For edge retention is more about not having cut with a dull edge or stop and sharpen when I have a lot of cutting to do.

Re: Let's bring the Mule back

You got a great one for your first Mule (imo). Of the 20 or so I've tried the K390 is one of the keepers for me. If you mean a similarly sized knife in the regular line up I don't think it would do well. The fact that Mules were made in fairly limited batches and are still some available tells a com...

Re: Fillet Knife? Steel Types?

Agree that we may need/want different knives for different fish. I'm fish almost exclusively for steelhead and salmon. An 8-9" thin and flexible blade gets fillets off the bone. I'd want something larger and less bendy for tuna and other larger fish. I would love to have an LC200N fillet knife....

Re: Just ordered some Nano Oil *cough snake oil cough*

Mineral oil doesn't last for me. I've tried to move away from lube unless needed. I generally don't need a free swinging blade. Some knives seem to do fine with no lube. Reel oil is cheap and works well. KPL is good. Based a couple of comments I'll try reel grease in knives that need a tighter pivot...
