Re: Are you going to Blade Show ATL June 2nd-4th?
Yes. I will be teaching a Blade U class Friday morning on testing of pattern-welded Damascus. Also Saturday at 1pm I will do a signing for The Story of Knife Steel at the Pops Knife Supply booth.

Re: Larrin's New Knife Steel Book!
I’m curious on why Larrin excluded M390/20CV/204P from the “ Stainless Knife Steel Evolutionary Tree ” chart on page 468 of his New Book . These are some of the best all-round Stainless Steels for both Corrosion Resistance and Edge Retention. Because it didn’t originate from other stainless steels,...

Spyderco has been around even longer than “a long time ago.” It is truly an impressively long list.

Re: Larrin's New Knife Steel Book!
Hey Larrin, What are the chances of getting you to sign my hard copy? sal As long as you bring it to Blade Show I would think 100%. Hi Larrin, I won't be at the Blade show this year. Won't get back to Colorado until mid June. Can I mail it to you? sal Yes but you should read it first because I’m te...

Re: Larrin's New Knife Steel Book!
With the conversion rate a $55 USD book becomes a $73 CAD book. A 500 page color book isn’t cheap to print. This is part of why I decided to offer the PDF.

Re: Larrin's New Knife Steel Book!
I'm waiting for mine to get here. Thanks for reminding me to get it Naperville. :) Larrin is really making good for himself. It may seem strange but I feel pride when people from our community do well. Joe The knife community has been very good to me. In many ways this book is about that community.

Re: Why are some tool steels laminated and others not?
Now since I assume that the heat treat is done after, not before the cladding (so with the already "sandwiched" blade/steel) this would mean indeed that there are more options for heat treating REX 45 (higher temperatures) than for SUS410/HAP 40... just how a layman sees it. It's not poss...

Re: Why are some tool steels laminated and others not?
All of the laminated steels were made by Takefu... Larrin, is it true that one disadvantage of laminated steels can be that the "outer" steel limits what kind of heat treatment can be done? I seem to recall that they say that its SUS410 cladding steel is the reason why HAP 40 (laminated) ...

Re: Why are some tool steels laminated and others not?
All of the laminated steels were made by Takefu, they are a hot rolling and laminating company and make relatively affordable laminated steels. They use their own steels in addition to Hitachi grades. No comparable company exists in Europe or the USA, which is why steels like K390 or CPM-CruWear are...

While I would certainly like to develop new steels, we haven't yet developed any and we would like MagnaCut to have time to proliferate before we would be introducing anything.

Re: Question for Shawn, Larrin and Sal
Your first chart does not list a heat treatment for CPM-15V. Perhaps you confused it with CPM-T15. The 15V article you linked lists the heat treatment that was used for the toughness coupons: 1900F with 500F temper. Its toughness was similar to M390 at 61.5 Rc even though the 15V was at 65 Rc. So it...
