Re: Sharpmaker, 101 dumb guide for me....
When I got my Sharpmaker, I had to order 3 or 4 of them (or maybe I ordered the stones separately and returned the bad ones) and mix-and-match the stones because a lot of them had little bumps on them here and there. Yes, bumps.

Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
SB is now on my "junk steel" list. Oh, I know it's great if you prefer wiping and cleaning your blades rather than using them, but for me, it's crap. LOL... Let's see, you bought a carbon steel knife, you used it near harsh acid fumes, it did not rust but instead developed a patina. Now i...

Re: S30v is a **** fine steel
I have not done my "HCl test" on S30V yet ... I always do it on whatever I happen to have on hand at the time. So far, though, VG-10 has slightly disappointed, S35VN seriously disappointed, S90V greatly impressed, and SB just made me laugh. (Yeah, I know SB is not a stainless steel.) This ...

Re: Is it me?
Cutting with a Spyderco on a ceramic plate? Never! Bah, it's fine. The one I used last time was my C162PBL Lil' Matriarch and the tip is fine. You just can't bear into it like an knutball and drag it on the plate. Thanks for the history lesson, demoncase. That stuff is always lost on my family, tho...

Well I've got to change my answer (you know, the one no one noticed and everyone forgot). SB is now on my "junk steel" list. Oh, I know it's great if you prefer wiping and cleaning your blades rather than using them, but for me, it's crap. And yeah, I know what I'm about to describe isn't ...

Re: Is it me?
Well, as I mentioned, it's a Vietnamese place, not a steak house. I wasn't eating steak, I was eating chicken. Could have made do with a fork but why should I? Why do I go back... Because they have great food and we all love it. It's the well-known place called "Pho Real" in Charlotte (yes...

Re: Is it me?
Just chicken. Nothing serious. I just don't see the sense in waiting for them to come around, then asking them for a knife, then waiting for them to come back with it, when I have one on my person to begin with. It's not like I'm waving the knife around and screaming bloody murder or something.

Is it me?
OK, it's happened twice now. My family and I frequent a Vietnamese restaurant. They never seem to present steak or butter knives by default, and I never realize this until I have meat that needs cutting. However, I always have a knife ready to cut... But when I pull out my Stretch or whatever I have...

Re: What is your little big knife preference?
I don't understand the phrase to begin with; "little big knife." I know it's an intentional oxymoron, but it does not make sense. There is no 2" blade that can do what a 4" blade can. If I'm cutting up lots of cardboard, as one example, I will use my bare hands before I use a wee...

Re: 2015 Forum Knife Announcement
Thank you, Spyderco, for a fantastic choice in forum knives. Awesome knife design, awesome steel. Practical, usable, sensible. Not my favorite color, but that's the least important characteristic of this great knife.
But please don't send me one with a screwed-up grind.

Re: Looking for a great slicer
What would make the Nilakka a better slicer than a stretch? Is it the thicker blade? the Nilakla has a 4mm thick stock, primary bevel and no secondary bevel. I recall hearing the first run of "chippy" ones in the 6-8 degree inclusive range. That's THIN at the edge. The Stretch is a tradit...

Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
What I consider blade play is when you push on the side of a blade there is a gap between the blade tang and washer or liner somewhere around the pivot pin. That seems to be the whole thing. By "blade play", I'm speaking in terms only of feel. I open the blade fully, disengage the lock, g...

Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
They always have side-to-side play, even a tiny amount, unless you tighten the pivot with a pneumatic lug wrench. Disengage the lock when checking.
Finally got around to stripping the paint off my clip. It looked terrible until I polished it with some 3000 grit, but now it looks great.

Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
FWIW (nothing, I guess), the patina doesn't bother me. Gives the blade character. And I'm far too lazy to prevent it. That, and given how neurotic I am, I try hard not to baby my stuff excessively. Sometimes I drive myself nuts worrying about damaging my stuff. What's sad is I have a BS in chemistry...
