Re: A Spyderco piercing knife…?

Longtime martial artist here. Going to speak solely about defense against a human attacker as that’s what I know something about. From a justifiable and effective self-defense perspective, your priority is to stop the attack as quickly as possible. If that’s the goal, slashing (which is likely to c...

Re: Knife lubricant

Here is a vote for Frog Lube. Why? Because it works well. It is made by wounded warriors in the US. It is edible so my Chief will not contaminate my apple. It is a lubricant and rust preventative that doesn’t gum up. One drop, once a month on my continuous carry Chief is standard preventive maintena...

Re: What's your favorite large Spyderco folder?

I voted for the Native Chief. After carrying it everyday for 18 months it has become my favorite knife, period. This is not really a big knife. It has the same overall length as our dinner knives at home AND it folds up. You can open it and close it safely with either hand. The well shaped blade is ...

Re: Are big pocket knives back in style???

I find that longer blades are easier to use on food. I use my pocket knife in restaurants. My knife is usually :) :) sharper . The longer blades keeps the gunk out of the pivot. sal A Spyderco Native Chief, a rack of ribs, a bib, and good company; it doesn’t get any better than this. Thank you, Sal.

Re: I grossly underestimated the Native Chief

A lot of love for that knife around here lately, it's really starting to tempt me. Though of course I'll have waited to long to get the Rex45 version at a fair price, that's the one I'd love to try. Like you I put off getting the Chief because of the irrational bad press S30v gets on this forum. Ha...

Lost my Native 5 Cruwear. :(
Will "they " ever make more?
I see there are 110V, S90V, Maxamet models.
Yo Mr. Gull Wing: tried to send you a PM. Don’t know if I did that right. I have a spare Native 5 in Cruwear.

Re: First Spyderco - S30v or SPY27?

Relax! Spyderco is a pretty good outfit. They want you to have a knife that you will be pleased with. So, the steel will be just fine. Two years ago I wanted to buy the Spyderco Chief. But, I put it off because at that time there was a lot of “dissatisfaction” with s30v. A year ago I bought the Chie...

Re: Baby got BACK(lock)

Well said, Mr. Knife. Had a frame lock come open in my pocket and suffered a bad cut. A compression lock PM2 came open when I dropped it on the kitchen floor. Grandson Dean said:"I'll get it Poppy." Fortunately I was able to step on the knife before the 3 year old could cut himself. Someth...

Re: Seki lockbacks vs. Golden lockbacks

Both are good. However, in my never to be humble opinion, the Golden Backlock is made to tighter tolerances. AND the finger choil on the Native and the Chief allow for SAFE one handed closing. This is a big plus on the farm.

Re: What steel balances attributes best?

A month ago I would have voted for Cruwear. My Cruwear Native was [and is] a fantastic knife/ steel offering. Last month I got a Native Chief. I had to "settle" for CPM S30V steel. BUT along with my new Chief I bought a Sharp Maker. Using Sal's video instructions, I quickly overcame previo...

Re: So what's your top 3 favorite steels? and why?

Sal: The best steel that I have experienced in a knife is Cru-wear. In less than 5 minutes the Sharpmaker will put such an edge on Cru-wear that my little Native will sing. You make it hard enough to keep an edge through a lot of farm work, yet it is tough enough that it doesn't chip. My Native hold...

Re: Golden Quality

At first I was surprised by this post. My EDC is a Native 5 Cruwear masterpiece that has been in my pocket for a year. This is the best folding knife I have ever had. The quality rivals custom made knives at three times the price. Just last week i took delivery on a Native Chief. Here again, the Chi...

Re: Spyderco Lock Type Preference

The mid back lock as used on the Native 5 works for me. On the farm a pocket knife gets used hard and often. The fact that I can open and close the Native with one hand (either one) makes life easier and safer working around animals. I sure don't have to worry about it opening up in my pocket. The f...

Cru Wear is the finest steel I have had the pleasure to use on a Spyderco knife. This steel wants to be SHARP. It wants to stay sharp. Makes a great knife.

Re: Sharpmaker Practice

Keep it light to make it right. This is good advice. If you are rounding your tips on the Sharpmaker, you are using way too much force. A member on this forum once recommended placing the Sharpmaker on a bench and not holding it with your weak hand. Hold the knife in your strong hand and stroke the ...

Re: Knife that won’t chip, won’t roll?

Hi Drebs. It seems to me that you're asking for balance. All steel properties involve some degree of compromise. A steel that has a good balance of properties will be the best option for resisting both rolling and chipping. Cruwear and 4V are extremely close to one another in their balance of hardn...

Hi ManyReason,

I would also suggest that you get a magnifier loupe, maybe 10X so you can study the edge as you learn.

sal
Please note: your iPhone has a 10X magnifier loupe built in. You can even snap a picture of your edge if you have a question or want to show your work.
