Re: Highest HRC for Spyderco

Deffo CTS micro-melt Maxamet, I had my Manix 2 in Maxamet tested for its Rockwell on its edge and spine and I actually wrote on here about in a discussion some where, if memory serves I think the edge was really high around 68 HRC to 69 HRC and the spine was lower and came in at around 66 to 67 and ...

Re: UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run

Well it’s just confirming what I thought either those fins are doing funky magic with metals or they actually know what they are doing and keeping the chemical composition hush hush and or how to heat treat this UHC Steel but I will soon find out first hand when it lands on my door step next week !...

Re: UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run

I completely agree with that, ZDP 189 is not a simple carbon steel, it’s like 1080 or 52100 and I’d choose 52100 every day of the week but only as long as you know how to heat treat 52100 properly as 1080 is easy to heat treat where as 52100 is not easey to heat treat. I’ve got a Spyderco military s...

Re: UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run

I have no idea what the nature of this steel is like but wether its just purely iron and carbon or has other alloys in its chemical composition but I’m deffo going to try a UHC knife infact I’ve already done it and purchased one so I will get to grips with it’s temperament and wether it’s practicing...

Re: Steels: What Has Been Your Experience?

Thanks everyone! Great info here. Stuman, I'll look into getting that app. Sounds like a good resource. LC200N sounds interesting... and I'd love to try out S110V sometime. In fact I just got a native 5, and it was a toss up whether to get it in S110V or Maxamet. Maxamet won this time. :) I haven't...

Re: Steels: What Has Been Your Experience?

LC-200N is a far better steel than many realize. Easy to sharpen, tough, great edge retention, zero corrosion issues. I think this is just the beginning of what is possible in steels, looking forward to future iterations of nitrogen steels. DVid I agree completely and steels in general are only goi...

Re: UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run

Are we talking about Roselli? They are like basic carbon steel knives but with very high carbon and run in the mid to high 60s. I have looked at them for quite a while but haven't actually had a chance to play with one yet. Yes your totally correct and for just a carbon steel to reach the mid 60s i...

Re: Steels: What Has Been Your Experience?

Oh sorry I forgot CPM M4 Which is a High Speed steel as is most of those bottom ones. I just thought it would be easer to get the app and when you come across a knife you can reference the steel in the app to see what it is.

Re: Steels: What Has Been Your Experience?

CPM 20CV, LC200N, CPM S110v, CPM S90, CPM S35VN, CPM S30, CPM 3V and 4V and then there is the 5 heavy hitters but lack corrosion resistance, CTS Maxamet, CPM 10V, CPM CruWare, and ZDP 189 and the big hitter CPM Rex 121. All the top ones are good at keeping an edge and rust resistance and all the bot...

Re: UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run

What is ultra high? Sandvik 12c27 has something like 0.6% and ZDP-189 has something like 3.0% UHC Steel has 1.50% to 2.00 % carbon so just for comparison 1080 has 0.75% to 0.88% carbon in it so that is a load of carbon in the UHC steel and it’s a fantastic steel apparently and I think it would make...

UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run

HI Guys, Just seen some beutaful Sandvik Ultra High Carbon Steel, finnish made - knives and it got me thinking, wouldn’t it be great if Spyderco done a sprint run with this steel. I don’t belive in my humble short few years of collecting Spyderco’s I’ve seen any UHC steel knives. I was quite blown a...

Re: Q. Sal convexed edge on a sprint run knife ?

There are some people on this school of thought, not too many from what I can tell. There seems to be people who just convert their favorite knife to a convex grind with a mousepad and some sandpaper. I've seen some howto's out there on this. It is said that everyone who freehand sharpens does at l...

Re: Q. Sal convexed edge on a sprint run knife ?

The original Moran fixed blade was convexed I believe. The Lionspy was also convexed. There are also a couple covexed edges in the works. Actually I’ve got a lionspy but I was thinking more along the lines of like a Manix or a military or para or even on a sprint run. I don’t think the lionspy can’...

Re: Q. Sal convexed edge on a sprint run knife ?

Actually I’ve got a lionspy but I was thinking more along the lines of like a Manix or a military or para or even on a sprint run. I don’t think the lionspy can’t really count though as it’s made by lionsteel and is based on their SR series I think.
