Re: Why doesn't Spyderco use D2 in their Seki models?
I read somewhere that the majority of D2 used worldwide is sourced from China. Can we try not to put every egg in the same basket? IIRC That's exactly why Spyderco worked long and hard on getting their maker in China to commit to standards for heat treating 8crMov13... It's basically Aus8 (which wa...

Re: Ghost pass stroping
Nib work is more controllable with un-backed abrasive sheets IMO, you can always put a sheet of film on your palm, fingertip or a mouse pad if you need to conform to the tipping more, but you can't make foam backed sheets rigid. You, sir, seem a true gentleman and a scholar. I agree on all counts. ...

Re: Shipping of internal parts
It would be terrible to throw away an expensive knife because you couldn’t get a $5 part to fix it. Another company I contacted recently to get a push button for one of their knives resulted in a re-evaluation of their products and a unhappy customer. Me! Just as a thought experiment: if you took a...

Re: Ghost pass stroping
Looks a lot like "Micro-Mesh" abrasive (a favourite of pen turners and fountain pen nib tweakers), but probably easier to find locally. I'd say it's not going to be a true "strop," far more aggressive than a compound-loaded strop, but I'm sure you can use it to get a nice edge wi...

Re: Steel lockbar inserts: necessary or not?
If lock-rock ensues, how can it occur if the lock-face and the blade no longer rub when deploying, thus reaching a kind of equilibrium? Again, if there is some flex in the pivot or stop pin you will get vertical play since the lockface isn't wedging tightly against the blade anymore. I should add t...

Re: Is this normal for MAXAMET?
Basically guaranteed it's something that happened at the factory before final surface treatment. Maxamet is very abrasion resistant, so in a stone washing tumbler you'd probably see corners rounding off before you remove pits like that. Hard to say why some stonewashed blades have the pits and other...

Re: Are acid washed knives safe for food prep?
I suppose a question like this is worth everyone asking at some point. But think about how you clean your knives. If it rubs off when you wash it with soap and water and a dishrag or sponge, it's not suitable for a kitchen knife. If there's no loose coating to rub off, you're fine. Think about how y...

Re: I'm gonna try to make my own serrations
I would imagine that a spinning wheel - so like a cut-off wheel, or circular saw blade, that was of course as wide as the serrations you wanted to make & was steeply radiused on it's face - so coming to nearly a point in the middle of the "cutting" face, sloping down from that almost ...

Re: A Larger Scale Dodo Model? PLEASE!!!
Context: owned a SE Dodo for a few years, liked it as a utility knife, but sold it when I got married and stopped working on the farm. The lock worked well but I prefer other locks. I carry bigger folders for work. I'm a big fan of the S-curve edge. The Dodo is an awkward size/configuration: other k...

Re: Might there be an AEB-L mule someday?
Just to clarify, I'm curious to see if Spyderco is able to get AEB-L up to HRC 63+ (requires LN cryo and a lot of precision) to make it stand out. If they can, I'd love to see that Mule. If the practicalities make that impossible, it seems obvious to pick 14c28n over AEB-L at HRC ~61. It's a win-win...

Re: Might there be an AEB-L mule someday?
Just to be a contrarian... Why not 14c28n? Can't get quite as hard, but at 61-62 (which is where it's likely to end up in a mass-produced knife) the toughness is still in the same class and corrosion/wear resistance are better. Larrin suggests the hardenability (lack of Mo?) of these steels means th...

Re: New CPM Stainless Steel??
Any idea how this new CPM would compare to AEB-L? I have been watching for AEB-L and it has not really made into production past the urban sprint. I'd like to know this as well. I have some AEB-L kitchen knives on the way so wondering how this will compare. I'd guess that the new steel will be toug...

Re: Knife lubricating agents
Many of those newer gun lubes have come a long ways as far as lubricity>> they just seem to get better each year. I was told by a friend of mine that Frog Lube is food safe. And I've seen that claimed by quite a few people on certain websites as well. But again I mostly just use fixed blade knives ...

Re: Any interest in a Spyderco utility knife (box cutter)
IMO, this isn't the niche Spyderco does their best work in--all the good utility blade holders I've seen are either too cheap/easily copied for Spyderco to really make a dent in the market, or they're way over the top in terms of materials/finishing details, which means Spyderco would have to charge...

Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end
Lightsabers and proto-alloy meta materials rely upon advances in technology that (to my knowledge) have not yet occurred. When they do occur, it’ll be just a matter of time before they appear in compact form as portable matter separators. I believe a day will come when mind power is developed to wh...
