Secondary market prices have little or nothing to do with the chances of getting an "economy" or re-designed run of a "hot" model as far as I can tell. IIRC Spyderco needs to sell thousands of units to justify the tooling and manufacturing time and actually make money on the run....

S35VN would be a definite increase in wear resistance, but IMO the difference between 8Cr and BD1N is minimal for thin super-slicing edges. (I.e. the difference in composition will not show up as much as the actual geometry / heat treat.)
