I am surprised to hear they are not stabilized, from what I have read very few woods (ironwood, ebony, etc) can be used on a knife with out being stabilized.

I have the Sharpmaker but the oval shape of the stones make a lot more sense. Just more consistent contact with the knife edge if you are not perfectly square to the flat side of the stone.

MagnaCut is a tougher steel so I am surprised it was chipping at 17dps. But if it does just go to 20dps and it will greatly increase its resistance to chipping.

That ceramic rod is way harder than hardened steel.

Maybe you could also treat it like ceramic tile, score and snap it.

I would try a Dremel with a cut off disk. I mean the disk will cut hardened steel cleanly so I think it would work on a stone.

It was not an option, but I am a big fan of the REC Scorpion (Tan with 10V).
