Re: Magnitude: "Red Headed Stepchild"?

Brown doesn't accent black. They should have used a lighter color to accent the carbon fiber. I find brown G-10 to be incredibly unappealing on any knife. I like the Magnitude's design but that brown G-10 is a deal breaker.

If it's from Buck they'll take care of you. Definitely not normal to see a chunk that large break out.

Re: Carbon Fiber wear and tear question(s)

Honestly the handle is going to be more chemically resistant than the blade. I worry more about my blade than the handle!

Re: Carbon Fiber wear and tear question(s)

Don't drop it into any super harsh chemicals. Don't leave it in the sun. It will not stain. It's basically a high end plastic if you want to think of it that way. Depending on the texture it might be hard on fabric, with peel ply being more aggressive than twill, etc. To answer all your questions, e...

Yeah that'd be cool. I don't mind S30V either.

I'm a lefty and I still don't own a PM2. A sprint version would be nice.

Re: Dirty Rubicon.

If the savings is enough I'll take my chances with Amazon. I got a GB1 off there years ago for $104. But I was sent a Tenacious. I exchanged it and got a new GB1. I didn't mind the 5 minute trip to the post office to save ~$40. The second knife with an issue was a Hungarian for under $110. It was re...

Re: Dirty Rubicon.

It's ok to buy from Amazon. If anything is wrong you just return it. Yep, then the knife goes right back out for sale to the next guy who comes here to complain about how Spyderco sucks and or their quality control screwed up. It's a downward spiral. I purchased several Spydercos from Amazon with n...

Re: Dirty Rubicon.

That's a real Rubicon. The fake version has obvious G10 scales. The fake Hungarian has poor G10 scales. If everything on your Rubicon looks mechanically sound I'd keep it. Or exchange it for another. Amazon lets you do that.

Re: Gayle Bradley 1 or 2 or Rubicon.

I have the Rubicon and GB 1. The Rubicon is very cool but it's not as practical as the GB. The GB is a little heavy but it's great. I highly recommend getting one.

Rust has nothing to do with steel quality. Get some Flitz and the spots will come right off.

Taichung makes the best models. The fit and finish on the ones I've bought are fantastic. Don't let the tang stamp deter you.

Re: Why do some denigrate VG10 steel?

High carbide fraction steel does not equal better steel, but this idea is perpetuated on a large forum dedicated to knives. People want S110V and other steels because that's what people talk about online. People write that S30V is no good even though just a few years ago it was considered a high end...

Re: Burch chubby - how to tell fake from real?

Typically the fakes are bad quality and it's easy to see the differences. Buy from a bladeforums supported dealer, the bladeforums exchange, or if you buy from Amazon make sure it's "sold by Amazon" not a third party. As for eBay, I tend to avoid it for things that are counterfeited.

It's a good steel but I wouldn't pay a bunch extra for it over VG10.

Re: VG10

Cheap knives can use VG10 with no heat treatment. Same steel, horrible performance. The steel is only one factor and not even the most important component to determine performance.
