Most people use Word with Outlook for email. Can you open a .doc file when it is emailed to you attached to a message?

Is it an older version of Word. I know Word 97 has problems in XP like what you describe. Has to do with Word registering itself for its filetypes in the registery. Can you reinstall Office or Word?
