Re: Edge retention comparison : Sharpmaker CBN, Diamond, Medium (+ steeled edge)
I have noticed the same thing without all the testing since I changed the angle on my S30V Millie. Cuts a ton better and longer now that is is thinner. Mike Swaim was the first person I saw write about that extensively. This was in the late nineties and the internet was a pretty crazy place for cla...

Re: but, when is the UF rod (or generally a fine edge) needed, and when is a coarse edge needed?
Does anyone have an opinion of the angle of the blade edge in regard to the direction of force? Is it good, bad or just ugly? There is a fair amount of research on why having the blade as an angle increases the cutting ability and reduces damage to the medium being cut. There are many reasons such ...

Re: Are the Sharpmaker UF stones worth it?
Ok - at first I did not get the point of the brick video but after hearing the conclusion - sounds like the case is being made for not getting the UF stones as these may be over-kill or not even needed for most applications. I would not make the argument they are not worth it as a general case, the...

Re: Edge retention comparison : Sharpmaker CBN, Diamond, Medium (+ steeled edge)
All that cardboard cut but utility steel and for it to still be shaving sharp. Guess I can sell my 204P and Cruwear knives. Ha, I have as many, or likely more duper steels than most people. However angle/finish play a larger role in performance. Roman Landes was the first knife maker I saw really m...

Re: Re:
But if the cbn is less coarse, this means it also is slower in reprofiling? The Diamond and CBN rods I have are near identical in grit. Would it make sense to start the reprofiling with a metal file? If it can be cut with a file then a file is faster than even very coarse stones. I am reading elsew...

Re: Corundum: Wonder Material
Alumina is the most common abrasive and ceramic material/base for cutting tools, I am not sure it could be used more considering its very dominate position. It is being eroded in the ceramic cutting department due to various ceramic composites which have very high resistance to fracture because of t...

[...] but if I try to sharpen and SEE what happens I would have a hard time trying to get a piece of truth out of that mess of variables which is a new knowledge which I do not yet master. I would have no idea what is going wrong, where does the problem comes from. Anyone with even a basic understa...

Re: but, when is the UF rod (or generally a fine edge) needed, and when is a coarse edge needed?
I must admit that I am so ignorant that I cannot even say which of these tasks are "slice cut" or "push cut". The more the material travels along the edge the more it is a slicing motion. There is no such thing as a pure slice because in all cutting the material has to move part...

Re: Unscientific Testing - Freezing the Manix
Just as a point of clarification, science is a way of knowing through observation and reliable methods of inference. If you say you are doing something intentionally in an unscientific way it means you are doing it with the specific intent to not know anything as a result.

Re: S110V vs. S90V
I'm not sure what "s110v is usually ran harder and for me" means. He means makers/manufacturers typically have S110V harder than S90V knives and that he finds certain differences in them. The thing about hardening and hardness in steels is that there is a tremendous amount of misinformati...

That is a curious selection as three of those are of a very specific class of steel and one is completely different.

Edge retention slicing cardboard (misc. steels)
This was requested as a challenge which I thought was interesting, the method is fairly standard : -1/8" cardboard cut on a 2" draw -45 degree angle of attack blade to cardboard -1 ft/s speed -edge retention statistic TCE (1.5%) in^2 -sharpness measured slicing bergia, 25 gram load -20 dps...

Re: S110V vs. S90V
I believe m390 is supposed to be tougher while also having good edge retention, but I've read of many people having issues with chipping out. m390 isn't tougher than S90V, people often assume it is because it has less wear resistance (when measured against silicon carbide), however it isn't the cas...

Re: What is REX 121 steel?
Any idea on its corrosion-rust resistance, or its wait and see for that? This is a hard question to answer because of the lack of easy quantification. It doesn't naturally form a patina. I have never oiled mine and it shows no sign of discoloring. It is above 52100 in that respect and would be simi...

Re: Are the Sharpmaker UF stones worth it?
Can anyone comment on whether the UF stones would be worth the extra $30? The UF stone is just a polished fine stone and it produces a more polished edge than the fine stone. Is it worth $30? Well compared to similar very high grit Japanese stones it is pretty inexpensive. From that perspective it ...

Re: ZDP-189 - choosing the right waterstone
I'm going to do the flush you recommend and also perhaps use as little post-soak water as possible when passing? When you are setting the apex with a micro-bevel it should take very very passes. If it takes so many passes that a slurry develops or the stone gets loaded then the edge isn't ready for...

Re: S35VN compared to VG-10 in Serrated Edge
And you would think that the more difficult a steel is to sharpen the better it would be performance-wise. Grindability is basically the inverse of wear resistance, so a very low grindability means a very high wear resistance and S50V has extremely high wear resistance - however when knives blunt t...
