Re: Scrap blade steel

We call the paperwork with steel shipments "mill specs" they are trusted if from reputible distributors. Some imported steels are not very accurate. The mills produce large amounts of steel, it is shipped to distributors who cut it into smaller pieces for end use machine shops. At the temp...

Re: Scrap blade steel

Theoretically if you are 100% certain of the exact original manuf and grade of steel, the scrap sheet can be reused in the furnace with new steel. The problem is what if somehow one sheet of different grade is mixed in,,, it destroys the composition of the entire new melt. It would be too expensive ...

Re: Lil Native slip joint?

Various articles have been written and videos made on how to convert a back lock into slip joint.
I believe the modification was done only to the lock bar engagement area and not on the blade proper.
This I assume was mainly for the UK laws.

Re: Scrap blade steel

Manufacturing plants will sell the steel scrap to dealers who specialize in that area. This includes sheets, tooling chips and grinding particles. The steel will be loaded onto railroad cars along with automobile components, appliances and various steel scrap. It ends up in "Mini Mills" th...

Re: Rounded tip

Operator error,,, draging the knife tip off the ceramic rods causes rounded tip.
Use the flats only and slow down when aporoaching the knife tip,, never let it leave the flat with pressure.

Re: Which SE to get as a first SE?

Wait for the new Endura Wharncliffe to be released.
FFG and SE will be available.
If you do not like it,,, easier to recover the investment with a design new on the market

Re: Spyderco and law enforcement personnel

An old friend, now retired from local PD, went on a call to assist. Walked into house and two officers were holding up a man who attempted to hang himself. They asked for help getting the rope untied,,, he had a knife and reached up with one quick swipe the victim was down and ready for EMT's to arr...

Photos when it is purchased please.

I also have the light grey Cruwear Military, purchased used with dirty G10,, easily cleaned to minty condition.
One of my favorites in collection.

Re: Lets talk stropping

I much prefer to deburr on the sharpening stones, after each stone from coarse to fine. Lighter pressure to deburr, some will use a stroke at 90 degrees to edge, others recommend changing sides after each stroke. If you deburr on wood, leather, cork etc. you have a tendency to tear away the burr and...

Re: Spyderco and law enforcement personnel

Over the weekend I visited our local donut shop, sat down at a table next to CT State Trooper. When using my Endura to cut a bagel in half,,, the Trooper asked if I liked Spyderco knives. I also had my PM2 which the Trooper really admired. We had an interesting discussion, he was a 21 year veteran a...

Re: Spydiechef But Larger

I suggest the Spyderco 6" Santoku Knife K08PBK.

Modify the tip to more curved if desired, the blade stock is thin and will easily be reprofiled.

I agree the Spydiechef has a blade that is very short for kitchen duty.

Fixed blade,,,, why contaminate a folder with animal skinning?
It is impossible to clean out the pivot area without complete disassembly.

I use very hot running water and new paper towels,,,, no problem with scratching.

You could polish out the marks on the 410 stainless cladding.

Re: Free hand sharpening techniques

Several years ago I tried steeling my A2 wood working plane blades to restore the edge. I used a carbide rod which is harder than the A2 steel, light pressure with trailing motion,,, worked reasonably well for one or two sessions then a light sharpening on Spyderco ceramic bench stones to refresh th...

Re: Free hand sharpening techniques

A butcher knife or low cost kitchen knife has a relatively soft heat treat and will bend or deform with use. The steel, both grooved and smooth, only bends back the mushroomed shape on the apex. This work hardens the steel and makes it brittle. An edge realigned with a steel is not very durable and ...

Re: Lupe: Asking for advice / recommendations please

I have a inexpensive loop with LED,,,, 15x,, the light is too bright in most cases,, not very useful when illumination bounces back and blinds your detailed view. Prefer to use a desk lamp to brighten the view,,, easier to turn the knife for best illumination for the apex and to examine for residual...
