Re: Best Spyderco folder for winter hike
B. If the blade hasn’t rusted shut yet, do you think the Military is a good choice of knife to defend yourself against marauding bears, packs of wolves and odd shark you encounter when hiking in the woods in winter? Or would the tip down limitation delay deployment of the knife rendering it useless...

Re: Best Spyderco folder for winter hike
Something with a big glove-friendly opening hole like the PM2 or Military and brightly colored for if (when) you drop it in the snow. PM2 in orange/XHP (CS exclusive), Pacific Salt, Salt 2, Military in something bright (was there ever an orange or bright blue handled Military?). The big glove-frien...

Re: Hard truths and observations
Knife pricing is kind of all over the place. I actually think 200ish for a Shaman is not bad. There are more expensive knives of lower build quality and material. Shaman is a high quality design of very good if not latest-and-greatest steel, manufactured to very high standards. The discussion here i...

Military - it is design genius in many ways. PM2 I would list for #2.

Re: Would you be interested in a Spyderco Hudson Bay camp knife?
I appreciate where you are coming from and share that enjoyment for design. I also appreciate the wide range of designs that Spyderco brings to life and the choices they create for those of us who benefit from their work. I love the annual catalog and updates, and all the reviews and reports. So as ...

Re: Would you be interested in a Spyderco Hudson Bay camp knife?
Sal reminds us too of the forthcoming Ankerson/Sanders knife. Not precisely the HBC that others pitched (and again, I like that design), but I can tell you that the Ankerson/Sanders design is excellent and will do just about any camp chore you want that does not require either an axe (and Spyderco n...

Re: Would you be interested in a Spyderco Hudson Bay camp knife?
1st - those of you who are not native English speakers - your ability to communicate in English is still great :) The Darn Dao is the model that came to mind when I first saw this poll. I love the design, but other than for collecting Lum designs, I won't buy one because it is out of line in price w...

Re: What's the lowest edge retention steel you'd carry?
S30V in a model / design I gotta have. Otherwise at least m390 / 20CV class or better.
With so many good choices in high cutting performance steels at reasonable prices, I am not inclined to go low.

Re: Would you be interested in a Spyderco Hudson Bay camp knife?
To be clear, I really like the design. I just have that tool covered multiple times over. Spyderco would do an outstanding job on one, but at the price they would likely cost for a quality build, I won't buy one. That is why I voted no. Not because of disdain for the design - that is reading too muc...

Re: Would you be interested in a Spyderco Hudson Bay camp knife?
After the Ankerson/Sanders camp knife and Skrama that L-M mentioned (great, not too expensive camp tool), I don't have a need for another largish camp knife. I actually have a bunch of knives that fit the bill, and although I like the overall design and the BR are nice looking, as much as I like eve...

Re: Tusk and SE
I am reminded by JD's comments that one of the main appeals to me of this knife was and is the marlin spike! The blade itself is a secondary consideration given the many other options that are available. It is definitely a useful part of this model (it is a knife after all) and more convenient to ha...

Re: Tusk and SE
... As to why not combo edge, that probably has to do with the size of the blade. The Tusk is a full sized knife with a small, albeit useful, blade. (2.39 inch blade with 2.14 inch edge.) I doubt a combo edge would be of any real benefit in such a miniscule package. Grizz That was my reaction to th...

Re: Tusk and SE
I find a sharp PE makes a much cleaner cut on rope than does an SE blade. I use multistrand poly- rope a lot (braided polypro or polyethylene rope) and SE tends to snag and make for frayed cuts. Sharp PE does not. I can't answer why the Tusk is not SE, but I like it the way it is.

Re: I wish spyderco offered deep carry clips
I don't know what to say about people who value the clip more than the knife itself. Buying a Kershaw or a SOG over a spyderco, because of the pocket clip? Lol. They don't have jobs that require a high performance knife. It may be that, but I find it is usually people do not know how to judge the p...

Re: I wish spyderco offered deep carry clips
I like deep carry clips on all my folders. It is to avoid being so conspicuous, not for concealment per se. That is also why I like muted colors, not polished silver. My favorite are the black deep carry wire clips - less conspicuous both in how far the butt does NOT protrude from the pocket and how...

Re: How different is your daily carry knife w/ gloves on?
I'm with Jim and will generally grab the Military, which was specifically designed for a gloved hand. sal I think you have a lot of user experience on this thread confirming that. It is a really ergonomic design in a lot of ways that a person can feel when handling one, but the contrast among model...
