I just want to throw another vote in for the Sharpie trick. When you have a known knife that you've been sharpening for a while, the Sharpmaker is just awesome and very convenient. When you have some random knife, and you have no idea what angle it's at, you're just going blind unless you have some ...

I guess it depends on what you mean by hard use. Mine go through absurd quanitites of cardboard, often double-thick cardboard. No problems so far, but I'm not likely to hit anything metal (the cardboard was used to ship one thing to me, and then gets trimmed to fit a different package to ship someth...

Here's my kind of practical way of looking at it. Bottom line: Spyderco uses the best steel they think the customer will be willing to pay for. In particular, currently if Spyderco makes a knife it's going to be from its default steel for the country it's made in - VG-10 in Japan, S30V in the US - u...

In the US this stuff varies from state to state, but the general rule is a reasonable person would have to be in immediate fear of grievous bodily harm or death that can only be stopped by the use of deadly force. In most states there's a concept that if you're at home a) it's assumed the other guys...

That does rather hint at a process improvement - I hope now you're filing them instead of deleting them. Disk space is a lot cheaper than a cranky customer.

Given how many knives are only appreciated after the fact, it seems like a "Golden Age" can only be appreciated after the fact... There are definitely some older designs that aren't around anymore and it's a shame they never caught on, but right now we have ZDP steel just working its way i...

I mostly buy from NGK but I nearly always double check Knifecenter because they are cheaper sometimes - and often they'll have some hard to find item first. I've had some issues with NGK with less than stellar handling of pre-orders and such so on a hot selling sprint run KC is definitely my go-to p...

Self employed, mostly as a photographer. I've had the occasional model comment or look surprised, but they only see them if I'm doing something like cutting a foot off the end of a ten foot long roll of heavy paper used for backgrounds, so it's very natural to make some comment like "This is so...

I've been cutting tons and tons of cardboard to shape and I'm just getting to the point where it seems like I should touch it up a bit, but only because I'm starting to feel some resistance when I go through the double thick stuff.

I think you can probably cut a few things without feeling too guilty.

I think sometimes businesses put up these pages so when you google the model they're what comes up. They're allowing for the lead time for the pages to get picked up by the search engines.

The guys on British blade forum are trying to help. One bid $5 500 but was outbid. I hope this is not having the opposite effect. The higher the bid, the higher ebay charges... :D Like he's going to pay the bill on a hijacked account. Anyway, you just file "non paying bidder" and you get ...

edit: I also thought since they didnt take PayPal something was sketchy... Right - it's not a huge red flag but the fact is that if you pay with PayPal a) it's pretty easy to get it reversed in case of fraud, and b) if you paid for it with a credit card and not your balance or checking you can also...

Lots of money, odd design, I can see a lot of people not wanting to take the risk. I'm sure a lot of people looked at it and said huh, $80+ for the ultimate boxcutter, and how am I supposed to sharpen this thing?

I have zero idea about that particular knife, but one bit of useful advice from the forum is to get a sharpie and color in the edge of the knife up past the "shoulder". Sharpen it. If the ink at the very edge is coming off, you're golden. If the ink is coming off the shoulder, you're tryin...

Basically it's best to assume any time estimate from Spyderco is how long it will take if everything goes perfectly. And we all know in life how often that happens. Between last minute product refinements, the possibility of manufacturing being harder than thought, and the fact that all of these mov...

CRTs can do it too, it's just more of an issue with LCDs because of the angle thing and because there's this particular deal with cheaper laptop screens to go green.

In particular noncalibrated laptop screens often show very dark greys as rather greenish. That's why professional photographers and other folks that care about color buy little gadgets that read colors off the screen and allow the software to adjust as needed to get the correct tones. Speaking of wh...

I'm wondering, what kind of edge does ZDP make? Is it biting like S30V, or is it smooth and razorlike like VG-10? Presumably the way you sharpen it makes a difference, but it reminds me very much of VG-10 - it's just that it holds an edge better, and that lets the factory use an edge geometry that'...

Well, they were able to do that whale blade by hand, so they have the technical capability. (I think they need this for prototypes as well). I would think they'd be concerned that if they screwed it up who is responsible - it could get sticky if you sent in some rare knife. I think it falls squarely...
