I would imagine a LEO would be most likely to use a knife in a rescue situation (cutting people out of cars, cutting off clothes for CPR, ...) than as any kind of weapon. I've never heard of an officer drawing a knife in my entire life. There's a lot of things they're trained and authorized to use h...

I'm wondering why Spyderco chose to go with a reverse S for their self defense knives then. I think this is a misconception. There are many types of self-defense knives. The Matriarch/Civilian and Yojimbo are the only models Spyderco advertise as strictly for defensive use, but I don't think that's...

I won't dispute the sturdiness of the Manix 2 but to me "hard use" means "fixed blade with beefy carbon steel blade". Especially for the situations you're describing, I think you want to carry knives that lack screws, springs, and doohickeys.

I suspect it's about as suitable as any 3.5" blade with a normal blade shape. It's as good as it gets for something you're likely to be carrying on you when something bad happens. I'd much, much rather have a machete with an extra 18" of reach but that won't fit in your pocket nearly as we...

One reason the blades are ground only on one side MAY be it's just easier or faster for manufacturing. I'm not 100% sure about that but I believe if putting a bevel on both sides of a serrated edge would perform better that's what Spyderco would do. I think it's actually extremely difficult to grin...

One thing I miss about my Rescue was being able to pry on things with the back side of the blade. From a utility knife point of view it's really nice to have the full thickness of the blade there. I think most of the ~.125" blades are plenty thick enough in this context, but many (like the Nati...

Whoa! Amazon usually has decent prices on Spydies but for some reason not on the Native 5. It's still nearly double what a Native Lightweight costs, but definitely more palatable.

I've EDC'ed a Native -- 1st gen, then more recently a the FRN/S30V model -- for I dunno, 10 years? It's a great knife. I don't own a Native 5 because it's $170 , way more than what I want to pay for a knife. Another reason I don't own one is my others are still kicking just fine. I'm not saying I do...

I had the thought BD1 was just ok in the edge department, from what he says it's around and near VG10 and I love VG10. I don't have an opinion on this but let's just say his edge holding opinion wasn't exactly scientific. Well, maybe the last TEN MINUTES of his video goes into this in detail but I'...

I always want to read about a steel when I see a spydie with a steel I haven't heard of before. But unless it says something like "very hard to sharpen" it doesn't really matter to me. Steels and their usage is VERY complex if you're not into metallurgy. I haven't been disappointed even wi...
