Re: Baby got BACK(lock)
Blade locks are basically ‘additional safeties’ to proper care taken during knife use. They’re not meant to be idiot-proof or fixed-blade solid, nor can they ever be, no matter how strong. Someone once said that “All folding knives are fixed blades that come pre-broken from the factory.” Jim I coul...

Re: Baby got BACK(lock)
....... My main concern is safety: whether or not fingers have to be in the path of the blade to close it one hand. I can close all of my lockbacks one hand and my fingers (one way or the other, even for a second) have to be in the path. I know that there are "methods" to avoid it (Wartst...

Re: Baby got BACK(lock)
My ranking: 1 compression, 2 liner/frame, 3 ball bearing, 4 lockback Strength (which one is stronger) is not a parameter that I take into account because I tend to believe that all of them endure ten times the force anyone (or at least I) uses before failing. Anyone (or at least I) will never put th...

Re: A few questions about the Opus.
I had the Opus on my radar screen for a long time (I was looking for a "Native Chief with a liner lock") but never pulled the trigger. I read some negative comments and, in addition, it was hardly discounted by almost every Internet dealer. That made me suspicious and think that the Opus ...

Re: Blades slightly above legal limit
Totally agree. I'm very OCD about blade to handle ratio. It's mostly illegal to carry knives in public here, unless you have a justifiable reason. No blade lengths are specified in the law, so as long as the knife is suitable for your intended use, no one really cares if it's 1" or 10". U...

Re: Spyderco Standard Clip vs. Lynch vs. MXG Gear
I've never used MXG clips but I do use Lynch's. They are perfect and have the same tension as the original Spydercos (at least the original clips of my Spydies out of the box). In fact, I substitute ALL Spyderco non-deep carry clips, as soon as I receive the knives, with Lynch clips (if one is avail...

Re: Recs for Self Defense while running/biking?
I don’t expect to ever have to use the knife in a self defense situation (at least not against a person) it would just make my family feel better if I had some kind of weapon and I’m not interested in carrying a gun, which is what they would prefer. Plus I’ve recently become interested in knives an...

Re: Recs for Self Defense while running/biking?
If you accept the advice of someone who has practiced martial arts with and without bladed weapons for many years, NEVER EVER carry a knife for purposes of self defense if you have not received training to use it. And when I say training I mean serious treaning (a couple of weekends in the parochial...

Re: Military Tanto poll
The tanto PM2 looks good . Why not the Millie “Lone Ranger” with Tanto? I have a couple of tanto blades in my collection (just for the purpose of completeness) but I never found a task that only they can perform (or would perform better). So no interest at all. In fact a Tanto Millie would look str...

Re: Why the hate of Zome?
For me that's another colour alternative. Most of my Spydies have black handles, so when I bought my first Endura, I went for the Green Zome variant. Actually, I like Zome much more than some of the colours used for the Delica, by way of example. I will add a Delica to my collection soon but I would...

Re: What is it that sets a good knife apart from a great one?
Design is all that matters. The materials and fit/finish are just trade offs for cost. One aspect that towers above all else is visual aesthetics . Like a car or a gun, a knife has to look cool or pretty. I have knives in a variety of steels, all of which are fine for most purposes. Optimum handle ...

Hahah that's awesome Julia! For the life of me, I can't understand why women's pants have such tiny little pockets.. I mean women need to carry stuff too, right?! Clever workaround! I've been debating getting some iron-on denim patches to try and curb some aggressive pocket-clip-wear in a few pairs...
