Re: Damascus steel use
I was more interested in cutting performance and edge retention.Corrosion is not an issue for me.I don't mind a light patina as long as I get a good edge retention and the edge is not prone to chipping.Carbon steels work great for me.I take care of my blades anyway.I might say I am a fanatic in tha...

Re: Damascus steel use
I have not used Spyderco's, but have used other VG-10 Damascus and can't see a significant difference in how it performs compared to VG-10. Hey Cliff tell me if this is true or not or anyone who has the straight scoop>>>> I've heard that "damascus" steel has the advantage of having more t...

Gotcha. No wonder you never seem to run out of test materials.

Re: Edge geometry optomization : VG-10 Lum
I assuming the glue had solidified pretty well and was rather thick to do that much damage? That is pretty decent deformation from that.

Re: Spyderco Persian 2 cutting and initial impressions.
How do you feel about that blade shape in general? I quite like this blade shape for my use. I don't due a great deal of intensive work with the tip of the knife but I do a lot of slicing and push cutting and I find that this blade works really well for those things. I do agree though with the asse...

Re: Nanostructured steel
Cliff, how old is this technology and how do you think it would work with steels like D2 and the other carbide heavy steel? Would it not work well due to the size of the carbides form the alloying elements? Also, I am struggling to understand the wear resistance. To take your example, how can the 10...

Re: Diamond and CBN benchstones?
.... That would an incredible thing to have for knives. I am going to be getting a bunch of them for evaluation, various grits/bonds, etc. . I just called every industrial abrasive manufacturer until I found one who was willing/interested in experimenting. I will be comparing them to the solid sint...

Re: Police G10 or Endura?
Personally, I prefer the G10 Endura. The Police is marginally better at piercing, but the Endura cuts better. Though both are very similar knives.

Re: Diamond and CBN benchstones?
The knife sharpening industry is pretty far behind the tooling industry in most respects in regards to abrasives. Imagine if you had a CBN sharpening stone which when the CBN wore you could just resurface it like you lap a waterstone and it would be back to as-boxed cutting speed again. They make C...

Re: Types of steel forming processes
That almost sounds like some kind of lame rap song : Vim, Var, ESR - niobium and vanadium. I am waiting for someone to add depleted uranium to steel, if you want to talk about cool then you now have anti-tank pocket knives. -- As an aside, the Japanese are crazy into purity for knife steels, they h...

Diamond and CBN benchstones?
What do y'all think about Spyderco making their own diamond and CBN benchstones? I have played with my friends diamond and CBN rods for the Sharpmaker and I quite like them, but as a freehander the Sharpmaker rods aren't optimal for me.

Blade steel and blade geometry seems to be the predominant factor these days. Spyderco dominates the market in both.

Re: Are some steels ahead of their time?
It depends on what people value in knives. I know people who don't particularly care about rust resistance or extreme edge retention or toughness. For some, H1 will be a fantastic steel, for others, it just doesn't offer the properties they desire. I don't think any steels are necessarily ahead of t...

Taichung puts out arguably the best production level knives on the market in terms of construction. Definitely my favorite Spydercos.

I say use REM oil or similar solvent and fine steel wool and it should be gone in about 30 seconds.

Like a lot have already said, that is effectively an Endura 4. I don't even know what advantage the Police has over the Endura. Its one of the better production level knives out there.
