How often do you have to sharpen it? Do you think the blade profile of the larger Spyderco rescue knives would work better with approximately a whole inch of plain edge at the end? 3 or 4 times when doing the amount of cutting (hundreds of cuts of sand and grit impregnated rope.) the rope itself is...

my girlfriend is from wisconsin. when she first saw the sea she kept calling it the lake. i got a good chuckle from that until i saw lake michigan for the first time. we took a road trip to byfield wi on lake superior and i saw the commercial fishery up there. they gillnet off of fully enclosed &quo...

it's not so bad when the seas are calm. we were racing an oncoming storm. by the time we had offloaded the gear and tied up the boat the winds had increased to 20+ knots from the northeast, the snowfall had gotten heavier and the sea had gotten choppy. the girl was happy to be on land by then :D

working Byrd

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e145/pete1977/byrdrescue2.jpg The Byrd Rescue 2 that Spyderco sent me to replace the Cara Cara Rescue I lost overboard. I have been doing a lot of my rope work and splicing indoors (in my kitchen) due to the temperature being in the teens lately. I usually use a bu...

a couple more from a couple weeks ago. The first one is my girlfriend stacking traps on the deck to bring in. This was taken on 2/1 at the start of a blizzard. There was 50-100 foot visibility and we were about a mile offshore. The chart plotter decided not to work and we went in by radar and compas...

http://www.marinews.com/Common-Whipping-527.php here is an animated version. you can experiment with how tightly you wind the coils to prevent slipping. pulling the two ends against one another will tighten the top several wraps and the bottom several wraps. It usually won't come undone unless one ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_whipping i use this knot when i make a gaff. It secures the hook to the round pole. I also use it to make a handle for the gaff. it is pretty easy to tie as it is basically the same method as a hangman's noose or the "chris reeve" style lanyard knot. pu...

I am a commercial lobsterman. Pretty much my entire life's savings is invested in the business so it doesn't leave much room for the knives. I am getting intimately acquainted with the ones that I do have though, as i use them a lot and get to use them for an extended period of time. all in all it i...

the centofante I and II seem to have a blade spine that is almost flush with the handle when closed and without the cutout on the handle scale would probably hide the hole completely. Something with a similar humpless blade and a straighter handle might be feasable.

I think that Ted's idea on the first page could preserve the integrity of the trademark and at the same time keep the knife from being opened with one hand. Keep the hole and eliminate the hump. Sink the hole below the handle scales, deeper than the native is, and leave only the top part of it as a ...

old tools

I was cleaning my boat and I have a bunch of rusty tools, mostly wrenches and a couple of large files. I can't use them and was going to throw them away. I actually had them in a fish tote on the way to the dumpster when I thought that maybe someone who makes knives can use them. I have seen knives ...

sal i used it quite a bit today. with gloves on and bare handed. i felt the lock give once while using it with the gloves on but it did not defeat. bare handed i didn't depress the locking bar. i am convinced it is the gloves hitting the lock release just right. i think the knife is fine and it is o...

Mine have never failed on me. i've never had any lock from spyderco fail on me before this one. the whole reason that i have the knife is to report back on real world usage. the lock could be faulty on this particular knife. perhaps the design itself is not suited to be used with heavy gloves on. i...

the exact model of the knife is a byrd rescue 2. it appears to be the updated version of the byrd cara cara rescue. the only differences i can see are the clip shape and the texturing on the FRN. This one was much smoother to open than the cara cara rescue. I prefer the old style clip (aesthetics mo...

there wasn't any lint or seaweed or dirt in the lock well of the blade. I usually open the knife and leave it on the helm between the hauler valve and the throttles so I know exactly where it is. It stays open all day and I make sure it is locked open. Whatever is defeating the lock is occuring whil...

i've tried to disengage the lock accidentally in several different grips and can't do it. I have a feeling it is the thick rubber gloves I wear at work. they are stiff when it is cold. a crease in them might be pushing on the lock.
