Re: ZDP-189 - choosing the right waterstone

Setting an apex with slurry forming stone can be frustrating if you are using to working with solid ceramics or diamond plates. When you put water on the stone and the stone breaks down and forms a mixture then that mix of water and abrasive keeps smashing into the apex as you are sharpening and it ...

Re: S35VN compared to VG-10 in Serrated Edge

The only relatively hard steel I've found that has good properties for serrated blades in my experience has been 440v ( S60V) and it seems to do fairly well with a plain edge too. That is a really interesting observation because a standard hardening on S60V leaves it with very low durability. It wo...

Re: S35VN compared to VG-10 in Serrated Edge

It is fairly difficult to compare edge retention in serrated knives because of the way serrated knives dull and the fact that even measuring the sharpness isn't straightforward with any kind of precision. If you look at them in plain edge then you can extrapolate and say you would expect a small adv...

Re: Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

Then I went back and noticed all of them said Vanguard. Yup, I just fixed it in the charts. Vanguard is a series of knives from Les Robertson which I have been poking about back and forth for awhile, name slip. Here is one of them : http://www.robertsonscustomcutlery.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/...

Re: Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

Update, the AUS-8A blade : http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y269/CliffStamp/edge%20retention/vanguard-4_zpswp3zckh8.png The reason why the AUS-8A jumps ahead so much is because of how percentages work, they all add not just to the base amount but they stack on each other. For example : -edge angle c...

Re: Spyderco model question

It doesn't need to be ZDP-189, just a similar class steel in regards to carbide volume . H1, and 8Cr13MoV/VG-10 is easy, but the other one isn't obvious. There are hawkbills not serrated in S30V, but not an obvious one serrated. I could get a non-Spyderco but I would rather have all three be Spyderco.

Spyderco model question

Is there a Spyderco pattern available in serrated with all of the following steels :

-H1
-8Cr13MoV, VG-10 (or similar)
-S30V, ZDP-189 (or similar)

Ideally in a hawkbill.

Re: Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

The hard part about these types of conclusion is just the very small sample set. Conclusions on small samples are very unreliable in general. I tend to hold those position as very tentative for a long time. Plus at times you are just going to have outlier behavior so you always need to realize that ...

Re: Best steel for Manix2 lightweight

I like the dark blue, but it's blade is S110V. That's even harder and more brittle than S30V, right? It is not inherently harder, but it is more brittle yes. I managed to chip my Manix once, without doing anything that seemed abusive. My VG10 Enduras get nicked, but they don't chip. This makes me w...

Re: Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

They have shown a jig sharpening robot/machine, but have not been clear if all knives are now being ground in that manner. Aside from the loss of jobs (never a trivial decision) for the ELU. there is no downside.

Re: Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

I had to reprofile my Candiru to be 30 inclusive per my Sharpmaker. There is a lot of variation in production, and to a lesser extent single maker and small shop knives, often because people refuse to use jigs so there is a lot of mark-1 eyeball level measuring. I have seen a fair amount of Spyderc...

Re: Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

All the ESEE I have are pretty thick behind the edge and are sharpened from the factory wider than 40 degrees inclusive. I don't have a Laser Strike. I have five, they vary according to the knife. For example the ESEE 3 which is one of the light cutting specific ones has an edge 0.023-0.024/14.5 (5...

Re: Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

Again some very interesting points you bring out Cliff. Especially concerning cryo-quenching>> I've heard from a lot of people who are into making knives that Cryo-Quenching works much better on stainless blades than it does on carbon steel blades. Most people don't understand what it does and you ...

Re: Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

That's extremely interesting Cliff because I'm truly very much surprised to hear that the AUS-6 blade steel on the older Spyderco VAGABOND Model outperformed the other two carbon steels in your test. Note that they don't have the same geometry, specifically the Vagabond has a much lower edge angle,...

Re: Sharpmaker and Paramilitary 2

Shall I just spend more time with the "grey" stones until I get the edge right? It will take a long time on the medium (brown) stones if the angle on the knife is much higher than the angle of the Sharpmaker, and by long I mean hours. The two more reasonable options are : -use sandpaper w...

Re: CPM REX

It sounds like a beefed up 110v from the little I read, maybe a bit too brittle, not tough enough? It isn't stainless, and in reference to the comment about ceramic, it doesn't have the properties of ceramic either in regards to sharpening. It is harder to grind than 10V, significantly more wear re...

Spyderco Vagabond, ESEE Laser Strike, Ka-Bar fighting/utility - cardboard

My cardboard pile is getting a bit heavy and I needed to trim it back, so an interesting comparison on a few knives with very close to the stock edges : Spyderco Vagabond -AUS-6 -0.019"/14 dps edge -high hollow grind Ka-Bar fighting/utility -1095CV, 56-58 HRC -0.048"/18 dps edge (thickness...
