Re: Upping the price.
I don’t think there’s much point in debating FFG pros and cons. It’s simply the standard. There are HG blades out there but they are much, much less common.

Re: Upping the price.
I would be more interested in hearing about manufacturers actually making knives in fair trade countries. sal Sal, have you looked at MKM’s knives lately? They have a Voxnaes design called the Isonzo that is pretty cool. I’ve almost bought one a couple times. $90 street price and made in Italy. I h...

Re: Upping the price.
Could you elaborate more on that? What are the other companies of which you speak and what are they doing? sal This question wasn't directed at me but I will comment. Here is one of my purchases this week, a Vosteed Nightshade. This is a $70 knife with Nitro-V steel, liner lock, bearings, skeletoni...

Re: Upping the price.
My single beef (and I’m a nobody, so easily dismissible) is that some Spydercos are Astronomically expensive. Yeah, there's really two veins in this discussion. One is that the higher end Spydercos are crazy pricy. If a friend was pitching me the idea that we were going into the business of selling...

Re: thoughts on a Spyderco Machete
Although more expensive I've heard very good things about Cold Steel's Katanas. They are good swords for beginners learning the ropes. I’ve heard good things as well, though they’re pretty pricy and there’s lots of competition in that price range. Honestly I was not prepared for how good a $65 kata...

Re: Upping the price.
I happen to have a couple knives arriving this week one with 14C28N and one in Nitro V. I don’t have any way of gauging edge retention though.

Re: thoughts on a Spyderco Machete
Hard, rust proof stainless steels wouldn't be the best choice for a tool like this. Soft steels that bend or roll when they take damage are a good choice here, and corrosion doesn't affect the edge as much as simply using the tool does. Excellent point on the hardness. I really do love my Tramontin...

My key on a knife solution
My trusty Lil Matriarch is my running knife. I typically run with just a knife, key, and phone. I'm always a bit paranoid about my key bouncing out of my pocket and getting lost so I've been wanting to attach it to my knife securely. I've got thru a couple attempts and previously was using a tiny ca...

Re: Upping the price.
6, 3, 7 - 8Cr13Mov 7.5, 3, 7 - Nitro-V 9, 3, 8.5 - 14C28N 3.5, 3.5, 8.5 - BD1N So excluding price, both Nitro-V and 14C28N are strictly superior to 8Cr13Mov. Superior but not by a whole lot. And BDN1 doesn’t really seem like an upgrade at all. Obviously everything has tradeoffs but I would rather h...

Re: thoughts on a Spyderco Machete
Machete is not a typical $30 machete. But when I saw how easily it went through decent sized saplings on YouTube I wanted one for self defense. I know that if somebody breaks in here, I can use it and it will not flex and bend, deflect, or fail on me. I see. For that kind of usage the longer reach ...

Re: thoughts on a Spyderco Machete
I would love one too but it’s a difficult market for Spyderco to be competitive in. The fact I can get an 18” Tramontina WITH sheath for $20 from Lowe’s supports this statement. AND it's an actual machete. Much like woks, any time someone tries to make it more premium they make it not what it is su...

Re: thoughts on a Spyderco Machete
Most knife people don’t know what a machete is or why it is the way it is. The Bark River machete is a good example — a big sturdy chopper is not a machete. Machetes are thin and not super hard (on purpose). They are consumable goods that are meant to be sharpened until there’s not much left and the...

Re: Upping the price.
One thing that strikes me as odd is the comment about your Chinese maker needing to learn to work with other steels. It's worth keeping in mind that China is a big place. The manufacturer(s) Spyderco uses may not be as capable as some of the other brands that are succeeding in the marketplace. And ...

Re: Upping the price.
I’m not really convinced by your argument, increases in the cost of inputs for manufacturing is different from the federal inflation rate. Specific inputs can increase greater than the rate of inflation easily. Increasing costs of Labor, Abrasives, power, steel, tooling, manufacturing services, ect...

Re: Upping the price.
The Strelit had another thing going for it, premium materials at a reasonable (not cheap) price. M390, Titanium frame lock, Marbled CF inlays, bearing washers. $220. A good value for the materials, and much to my chagrin the quality was definitely there on this knife. Yeah, this is just the reality...

Re: Upping the price.
I think price increases in kind of inevetable, especially with the cost inputs going up. This inflation argument has been brought up a few dozen times in this thread, which is why I pieced together a graph of prices vs inflation in this comment . The only products on that graph tracking inflation a...

Re: Spyderco Southard
I never bought the Southard when they were all the rage. But I did score a Positron when they discontinued them. Very cool if flawed knife. It’s a weirdly stout blade in a gents knife package — an office shiv if you will.
