All steel will fail at some point, it will either chip or roll, but one or the other will happen in the end with any steel. It how fast the edge rolls or chips that really makes the difference. What got my attention was how fast the edge rolled on the CRK blade, no so much the Native 5 as it really...

I agree, for a field use 3mm is great. I went ahead and pre-ordered one.

To me it is all about the steel first, then the design. Now that I know about S90v, CTS-20CP, M390, ZPD-189, etc. (I own one of each except for S90V), no, I am no longer interested in getting any knives using S30V/VG-10/etc. as I am more than happy willing to pay a premium to get a premium steel. Is...

How do you test sharpness? I use various sharpening methods depending on the knife/steel. I typically use a Lansky Deluxe Diamond kit or Spyderco Sharpmaker to set the main edge, and then instead of using the Lansky/Sharpmaker for the secondary edge/micro-bevel, I use 3M lapping film against a soft...

Allow me to dredge this thread up with some more relevant information. This place seems to offer pre-cut 3m lapping film at a pretty high price, but what interests me most is their "alternate rating" of the lapping film's grit equivalent relative to Mr. Ankerson's comparisons. Food for th...

I have been contemplating doing the same thing, but I have been a little woried about the 300F curing temperatures possibly affecting the temper of the steel. I just emailed John Norrell (from Moly Resin, which is what I have been using on my flashlight/machining business), and he just replied this ...

The videos I've seen online have had people duracoat without baking the knives at all, I doubt it lasts quite as long but then you won't have issues with heating the blades up. Nutnfancy on youtube has a few videos of him painting and a durability review, he used and airgun to spray knives, guns an...

Well guys/gals, I went on to clean the stones in my old Sharpmaker, and under magnification I found that sure enough, there was enough wear (specially the black stones) to warrant getting a new one as you guys suggested, so I took advantage of Amazon's good prices during Black Friday and ordered a n...

Don't rule out painting the knife with duracoat or similar, that way you can "freshen" the knife up if it looks hard used later. I haven't tried yet but have seen positive reviews, and you can do it as often as you need. The ONLY thing that worries me about Duracoat, Moly Resin, and other...

Yes, I think the CRK's are worth the price - very well made, they work very well, and a joy to use. Although not an apples-to-apples comparison, in terms of best value, and excellent ergonomics, I feel Spyderco is a better deal: http://m3coupe.com/knives/Spyderco/DSCF6124.JPG http://m3coupe.com/kniv...

OK, thanks much for the update guys. Early/mid nineties sounds about right, as this one has seen a fair amount of use (I need to go ahead and clean the stones!), but I had always keep everything in its original pouch, so it still has a fair amount of life left in it ;)

possible to upgrade old Sharpmaker?

I have an old Sharpmaker that I bought new many years ago, and that I use from time to time on my knives - I even have the old original Spyderco diamond sleeves for this kit. I noticed yesterday that the newer model base allows for more angles, therefore making it more versatile. I would like to kno...

Lefty here, and I really like the compression lock as a lefty. Works really well for me. It is much easier to get hold of them by simply calling them on the phone (listed in the brochure). At any rate, Scott just finished making me another custom sheath for my "shorty" mule: http://m3coupe.com/knives/Spyderco/shorty_mule/DSCF6905.JPG http://m3coupe.com/knives/Spyderco/shorty_m...

I am a lefty, and I guess I just got lucky with my CTS-20CP PM2, because my lock has been perfect and smooth from day one. As a lefty I still prefer the Axis lock, but the compression lock is (to me) still better than a liner lock in terms of operation and operation. In fact, the liner lock is the m...
