Re: 4116 Stainless steel and Japanese AUS 8?
Cold Steel's Aus8 is very well heat treated in my opinion.

Re: My sharpening and maintenance gear
Thank you guys!
Of course I use a Sharpmaker too, but it is in my drawer Soon a 400grit Naniwa Chosera and a coarse Zische (Germany) stone will follow :)

Thanks. Different diamond/sic compounds for leather strops. I don't strop very often except axes, straight razors and wood carving tools.

Re: Glock Knives and AG Russell Sting Knives
I own several Glock Field knives (I live in Austria). They are nearly indestructible but don't cut well. Good throwing knives, good pry bars
They are made from spring steel. There is a model with a saw on the back which doesn't work really well. It is a saber flat grind.

Re: What grit do you consider coarse or fine?
I prefer a toothy edge for the most tasks (600 grit Atoma micro bevel). I only polish the edges of axes. In my experience slicing aggression stops at 800 grit (jis) and edge retention decreases dramatically. I know it depends on what you are cutting etc. but for me this way works extremely well. I a...

Re: So this just happened to my Manix2 :(
Ouch that hurts. I don't like the Ball Bearing lock. I own 3 Manix and I don't feel safe while using them because the steel ball touches only a tiny bit of the blade on the top. It should lock on the whole surface of the spine...

Re: You CAN grind your knife too thinly
Cliff, i know :) I also own a Herder Buckels which measures about 0.005 behind the cutting edge. Just wanted to know how Steel Drakes knife compares in terms of flexing to mine. It is quite sad that there is only 1 company left in Germany that I know of which still produces this kind of knives. The ...

@ Steel Drake:
0.010" 1mm above the edge is exactly what my damaged knife measures. So I think your edge line will flex when you run it over your fingernail?

Re: You CAN grind your knife too thinly
Thanks for the information. I just wanted to try out how this thin knife performs. It gives you a lot of feeling for edge angles/geometry in terms of different applications. I did another test with a Wetterlings axe. I sharpened it at ~10dps. It deformed heavily when I chopped wood with it (torque p...

You CAN grind your knife too thinly
Hey guys, I just reground a pocket knife (Otter brand from Germany, carbon steel) for fun. It is ~7 thousands of an inch thick behind the very edge which flexes when you cross it over your fingernail. I reground the whole primary bevel right to the apex and polished the whole blade. Afterwards I put...

Great great work! Very nice data. It would be interesting to see how a higher alloyed steel like Vg-10 behaves.

Re: Just steels...
Try a Cold Steel Voyager. That stuff you cut with the Klein knife won't dull the Voyager.Even if it might be a one in the batch failed knife, i'll never try my luck again with a AUS8 blade
BTT: I also would love to see some carbon steels and steels like AEBL

Let it break in and maybe lube it with ball bearing fat.

Re: Blade Regrind with Tormek T7?
Yes, the Shapton 220 grit also gets muddy very fast.
The Sigma Select Series is meant to grind HSS and other very high amount carbide steels as far as I know, so these stones should not be too hard, but I have no experience with the Sigmas.

Re: Imanishi Bester (Nubatama) 220 grit vs. Atoma 140 grit
Thanks for the answeres. I do quite a lot of sharpening, mostly grinding a new secondary grind on very dull/abused knives from other people I will try the sandpaper method first, thanks for the idea.

Imanishi Bester (Nubatama) 220 grit vs. Atoma 140 grit
Hey guys, I am searching for a new stone which will be used to rebevel very dull/damaged knives. Mostly Stainless steels such as Vg-10, 420, S30V and so on. I have used a Eze Lap 150 for those kind of jobs but it wore out rather quickly. I like diamond plates but they seem to last not very long (eve...

Re: Blade Regrind with Tormek T7?
OK I'm looking forward to the results. Currently I am searching for a new coarse stone and I can't decide between the Shapton 120, Sigma Select 240/400 and Naniwa Super 220/400. I need a stone which abrades a lot of Steel (all kind of) and leaves a stable finish with which I can put a microbevel aft...
