Recently, in testing and training rather than combat, I found a couple of situations where the best defang the snake or biomechanical cut actually began with a thrust. .... Certain pressure cuts did fairly well, as did certain of the "three dimensional rotation" cutting methodology motion...

I cannot tell you how odd I find it that "Scissors - metal with pointed tips and blades shorter than four inches" can be CARRIED ON according to this list! Really, scissors are two knives bolted together. I pressed this point last time I flew, and ended up gifting a knife to the kindest T...

Smallfly Flippers?

I'm so in love with my baliyo pens that I bought a smallfly for a sweet deal. Who flips these guys? Does anybody wear them for EDC? It looks wicked, and I'm pumped to have my first :spyder: blade made in Golden.

i am no expert when it comes to explosives but through the x-ray machine couldn't cheese also look like a block of C-4? you could color it, shape it into a wedge and shrink wrap it and throw a sticker on it. That has happened plenty of times to me with my checked baggage. They just leave the cut-op...

I had a piece of string cheese (of good size) and they made me eat it before passing the detectors. I am only traveling for two days, so I would prefer to save the money of the checked luggage. I keep a dragonfly at home for when I return in case I don't check luggage. My baliyo is part of my edc, s...

I just retired my D2 after years of using it for carving, cutting rope, cutting cardboard, cutting tin and anything under the sun. I love that knife. I had to re-profile the tip as well because I broke it doing some stupid throwing stuff with it. I love my new d4 waved because of the tip re-profile ...

Baliyo at the Airport

Has anybody here ever tried to take their baliyo onto an airplane in their carry-on? I love my baliyos and I want to take one home to show my friends back in Wisconsin but I'm afraid of the TSA taking it from me if I try to carry it onto the plane. I don't see why they would, but they have prevented...

When there is no trainer available, like with the dragonfly, I grind the blade to a rounded flat approximately 1mm wide. Less than that will still split skin pretty easily. The tip tends to have to be a circle of approximately 4 or 5mm in diameter for them to be useful without stabbing. People use a...

You're right on dbcad! That was a great simplification of the droning on that I did. Pourbaix diagrams are lots of fun.

In Japanese sword cutting people test cut on soaked tatami mats because they give comparable resistance to appendages. I've taken a delica2, a delica4 and an Endura2 to these mats in my training with good results. All knives were 1/2 serrated. I can generally put my d2 and my d4 through a tatami hal...

Spyderco @ Eugene, OR?

Is anybody going to the quickly approaching Oregon Knife Show in Eugene? I'm hoping the :spyder: crowd will be represented. Does anybody have any good prior experience with this show to share?

Hi Charlie, First, an apology for how ugly the equations will look in this format. You really need subscript to do it correctly, but I will try to get the general ideas across. As a physics buff, you probably like phase diagrams. There is a chemical equivalent to the phase diagram as well. You will ...

the Deacon hit the nail right on the head. A+ on chemistry, and this is coming from a college chemistry teacher. It all has to do with hydrated oxide vs. oxide. Many chemicals like weak acids (vinegar) or even weak-base buffer solutions (urea/uric acid) will allow for an even patina to form. Some of...

Sadly I work mostly with ceramics, so no new blade metals any time soon. With Spydies I find that when I like the fit and finish of a particular model, I like to buy two or three. My EDC knives usually end up in at least twos, unless the model has a specific trainer. One or two of each model sharp, ...
