Re: Hawkbill doing what it does best

I love using mine, but today I took this picture of it with some of its old relatives. https://i.postimg.cc/mrdDQp2B/A6-C0-AB8-A-0-C46-4-C17-96-A0-62021440-FE32.jpg From smallest to largest, those are casts of the “killing claw” of the raptor dinosaurs Velociraptor, Dromaeosaurus, Deinonychus, and U...

I like the way this photo looked more than the one I have with Spyderco’s engraving of the “REX” steel name in fo...

Shortly after eating this I would walk my paddleboard out and explore some local mangroves with a UKPK Salt in my waistband.
Not long ago, the area in the background was about 2 feet underwater due to storm surge.

Re: Will Spyderco use the Manix and Smock locks again? Sage 6?!

I think the non-proprietary lock I’d be most interested to see from Spyderco in their Sage series is the Superlock from Snecx. I think the lock is well designed and see the maker’s decision to encourage others to utilize their design as a pretty cool thing to do. I’m sure there are already new Sages...

Re: I sure would like something new...

I am not bored at all, but I do agree that new is cool. We are aware of some new stuff that hasn’t been seen in reveals yet, including “in house” and collaborations. I know there is a thread dedicated to talking about collaborations we’d want to see. I have been meaning to mention a maker there, but...

Re: Waterway

Really like the ergos of the Waterway. It didn't seem like an unpopular knife, so I think there will be a magnacut version eventually. What's not to like ? The scales. I got rid of mine for that reason alone. Slap some regular G10 or micarta scales on it and I'm back on board. The grip of the stock...

Re: “Best” steels video with Larrin

I think it’s cool that talking about edge angles can be a shared interest on a forum like this. Anyway, I just remembered that I thinned and convexed some old traditional knives I have. Thin stock, thin convex, and a small swedge, make for some nice cutting performance in a 2.5 inch blade. Not sure ...

Re: The Pre-Diver, Dive Probe, and Mini-Probe!

Those are really cool. Makes you think with the newish pocket pry bar trend would something like this be popular once more? I’m not sure how popular it would be, but there is still probably a niche market that exists for it. I think it would be interesting to see what Spyderco’s upadated/modern tak...

Re: What % of you collection has the factory edge angle?

I will start playing with angles more as I get better at sharpening freehand. I’m working on getting better sharpness at relatively lower grits and trying for a more consistent technique. I like the 400grit CBN edge I’ve got on my 15V Manix 2. The factory edge wasn’t too bad, but I have evened it ou...

Re: Mass Extinction Event

I'm stunned at the loss of the wharnies. And puzzled. But as stated on the main forum, the time of the Byrds may be gone with all the high quality, inexpensive knives that have flooded the market. I think it might be possible to characterize a broad trend in the knife manufacturing, as well as comm...

Re: Salt 2 Wharncliffe: gone for good or CQI incoming?

I like wharncliffes for all of the usual stuff like in Jazz’s video, but I also often reach out to cut things like rope or branches. In these cuts, the blade’s reach, available edge, and leverage are very important. Wharncliffes, especially serrated ones 3in+, are therefore some of the best blades f...

Re: Sage Questions

Good info. The Sage was never on my radar till this year at BLADE. After handling the prototype Sage LW in Maxamet I was very interested. That’s curious because I’m pretty sure Eric briefly described in an interview a Burnt Orange Sage 5 LW in REX121. I also know from another thread that Sal carrie...

Re: BUT,WHY?

I am also curious if a new abrasive will “replace” the ceramics for the finer grit benchstones? I mostly use my CBN plate for sharpening, but the medium ceramic is also very useful. The only things I would look for anymore is maybe some CBN stones and rods that bridge the two, but I still need to le...

Re: Will the PM2 in Magnacut make the Caribbean obsolete for you?

I have a serrated sheepfoot Caribbean. I doubt there will ever be a Salt PM2 that is similar. It is one of my favorite knives. I also prefer no choil and the longer edge. However, the Salt PM2 is very interesting because of MagnaCut and my perception that the handle’s grip design (the milling and fi...

Re: Large fixed blades in 20CV

Here’s the Sustain’s product description. It describes everything you’d need to know about the knife. For example, it is 7.3 ounces. It needs to meet the needs of some pig hunters and still be capable as an all around knife. https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/FB39G/Sustain-trade-G-10-Black/101...

Re: Large fixed blades in 20CV

I’ve seen videos of people battoning with the Zoomer. I think spyderco used 20CV because it’s a good steel. For example, the Province was tested in s30v, which proved to be enough for the task, but went the extra mile with CPM-4V. Spyderco seems to typically value wear resistance more than most knif...

I think wharncliffes in general are doing just fine, as many are sticking around.
It’s just that, for whatever reason, some aren’t popular.

Re: Mass Extinction Event

I forgot to mention that I did pick up a Flight as a gift for a family member. I’m less worried and more curious. I have many thoughts about Byrd knives that I’ll get to eventually, but I want to hear what other people and Spyderco themselves are thinking right now. I am still pretty new to the game...
