Re: CPM 20CV Thread

I've used 204P on a ZT 0562 CF and it was great on that big chunky knife. I've also used 20CV on a Spyderco Watu and it's pretty awesome on that thin slicey blade at the other end of the spectrum from the big ZT. Below 20 DPS I had some edge chipping in hard use on the ZT, but at 20 DPS it's been pr...

Re: Hard Use Knife

Since you're looking at used knives, I'd try to find a Native 5 LW over a Chap or a Buck 110 for your stated uses. Otherwise, for a hard use back lock for $60 I'd get a new Cold Steel SR1 Lite.

Re: Picked up my first SE knife... I don't get the hype.

Two things. 1. Everyone who raves about SE does so with the caveat that you need to tune it up on a Sharpmaker to round off the points on the serrations and make it a bit more of a scalloped edge. 2. I did the same thing you did, and thought the same thing. I think the D'fly isn't a good knife for S...

Re: Random guys honest assessment of the Slysz Bowie.

Is it just the angle of the pic and knives, or does the SB really have about the same grip area as the small Sebenza? Sorry about that, yes it was just the angle. Here's a more accurate photo of the sizes. https://i.postimg.cc/43qXbtwr/20210507-182433.jpg Thanks for this additional pic. The useable...

Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!

All that to say, you're spot on. It's a huge financial risk for a single retailer to commission an exclusive, and that risk gets even bigger with higher prices models. KJ doing 600+ SBs that they have to sell all of is a different category of risk than MGE wholesale paying for a run of 1200+ teal S...

Re: Random guys honest assessment of the Slysz Bowie.

Wasn't the Sebenza 21 was replaced by the Sebenza 31 about two years ago? CRK has yet to make a Sebenza 31 with the Insingo blade shape, but I hope they do eventually. I love the looks of the Sebenza21 Insingo, but I have no interest in the Inkosi with its finger grooves.

Re: Honest opinion of Gin-1 (G2) steel?

FYI, After we helped Carpenter develop their line of blade steels, the head metallurgist asked me what they could do for me in blade steel. I told Rick that I would like to see an American made version of Hitachi's Gingami 1, tweaked. The resullt was CTS-BD1N. sal IIRC you've posted before that BD1...

Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!

... Let's do some HYPOTHETICAL math, as I have no idea what the actual numbers are. So, a company wants to have a run of knives made that retail for 400 dollars a piece. Lets then hypothetically say it costs them half of that for each knife, 200 dollars. $200 x 600 knives is $120,000 for a run. Tha...

Re: How long have you been carrying knives, and how have your needs changed?

30+ years, starting with a Vic Classic SAK at age 8 or 9. Various other cheap back locks and slip joints until I got one of first gen Gerber Multi-Pliers for my 12th or 13th birthday. When I was 14 or 15 and got a Benchmade Mini Stryker for Christmas. At 16 I started working on the fishing side of a...

Re: Choosing a new Spidey ain't easy!

For cardboard, Spyderco's serrated edges (particularly after a little tune up a Sharpmaker) are incredible. The Salt 2 LC200N SE, Native 5 Salt SE, and Pacific Salt 2 LC200N SE would be good places to start. If you prefer plain edge, for me and some others the Sage 5 LW is a Goldilocks of ergos and ...

Re: Sprint Run Poll

OTHER - Sage 5 LW. Sal said this knife would be available for sprints and exclusives. There have been no variants from the base model offered yet. It's an in the middle knife that fits big or small hands. It has the mid height thumb ramp, so it's not like going from a Native to a Para 3, or vice ver...

Re: Why doesn't Spyderco use D2 in their Seki models?

Sal has said he and Eric weren't impressed with the Chinese D2 equivalents that they received as testing samples. According to Z Knives, the Japanese equivalent of AISI D2 is JIS SKD11. Also per Z Knives, Daido, Hitachi, and Nippon Koshuha are the Japanese steel mills that manufacture some version o...

Re: More affordable compression lock knives

I have looked at the Sage 5 LW and Para 3 LW but with my XL hands, I usually go for knives on the larger side. ... I also have XL glove size hands. The Para 3 LW is a little cramped for me, but Sage 5 LW is great. The handle design at the tail end of the Sage 5 really helps to give that extra bit o...

Re: Newest Teal Exclusive....Para3 LW

So S90V is $10 more than 20CV in knives that are otherwise identical aside from the handle color. But the 20CV version was exclusive to 1 dealer, while the S90V version is a distributor exclusive that went to 15+ dealers. So there was an extra shipping step and the distributor who paid for the run u...

Re: More affordable compression lock knives

The Sage 5 LW uses the Taichung FRN pattern / texture, which is less aggressive than the Golden FRN pattern / texture. It's an excellent knife with a better pivot than the standard Sage 5. I agree with the others here who are suggesting that you should try it out. As for the "Amalgam/Kapara/Iku...
