Re: Does anyone 3D print scales or accessories?

I've printed quite a few different scales. SLA Resin is by far the best for details but ive done FDN scales as well and they are functional. No i'm on to making scales with the CNC out of wood, and other materials. It is truly amazing where technology has taken us in the last 20 years. Spyderco Mule...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Do you have a CNC setup??? That's pretty sweet looking! Yea, I recently picked up a small cnc to learn on. I love making things and so far it has been a great tool to use. Ive made detailed textured maple scales, smooth birdseye maple, smooth walnut, and I have some ironwood and mahogany here that ...

Re: Birdseye Maple CNC Scales

Thanks Josh. Did a smooth set today that really show off the Birdseye in the maple. About 15 minutes of light sanding aff the cnc and a quick coat of BLO and ready to go. 20240204_174535.jpg Oh man, those look fantastic with the grain revealed! Yea, I have some even better Birdseye to work with but...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Anyone that picked up in store from SFO be willing to post up some pics? Would love to see a closeup of the edge. Thanks in advance! I have made up several dozen mules for friends and to donate to local charities, so I bought a few of these at SFO on release day. I ended up returning them due to no...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Hey, All: The HIC Mules are sharpened one at a time by one of our most talented and experienced finishers using a 600-grit diamond wheel. For at-home sharpening, you'll need a diamond or CBN abrasive of at least 600 grit as well. Finer grit (800+) works even better. Stay safe, Mike Thanks Michael, ...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?

go slow, be patient, and remember that the bur will be very, very delicate--one pass too many could wreck it, so check the edge often, alternate sides frequently, and hold the angle precisely. Slow and steady wins the sharpening race. Please clarify? Ceramic creates a burr? Don't want to wreck the ...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Hi Kristi, Thanks for helping facilitate the release of this amazing new material for us to test. Any chance you can enlighten us on how Spyderco is "hand sharpening" these blades? what types of technique and / or materials have you guys found to work well? Also, is it possible to give us...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Hey, everyone: We just confirmed that there will be more MT40P made available at a later date (more information to follow). Since they are hand-sharpened here, it's a time-consuming process, and we didn't want to hold up the release any longer. If you'd like, you can contact SFO via email at sfo@sp...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?

I'm planning on testing out some of the techniques and tools I have from my stone carving experience. I am thinking it will act more like stone than steel when sharpening so I am thinking very fine diamond on various materials. I have soft backed diamond wheels going up to 50k as well as diamond pas...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Got mine, Looks like a T15 fell into my cart while I was shopping too. Glad those were in stock as well as I didn't get one and it is nice to combine shipping up here to Canada. I am very interested to see how the HIC reacts to different sharpening techniques and how long it "really" holds...

Re: Birdseye Maple CNC Scales

Strong work! Can we see a photo of your CNC machine?? Thanks. I picked up a little Genmitsu 3018 ProVer V2. I waffled back and forth for quite a while on spending 10X as much for a larger and nicer machine but decided to get this to learn on. So far I am very impressed and look forward to expanding...

Re: Birdseye Maple CNC Scales

Thanks guys, im super happy with how these turned out. I'm definitely planning on making more. They take about 8 hours per set to mill at this detail and I still need to dial in the mounting hardware a bit though. The 0.208 button head 4-40 screws that I use for my resin scales don't bite quite the ...

Re: MT40P – HIC Mule Team Dropping Soon!

Challenge accepted. I've got a few ideas up my sleeve from my stone carving and polishing experience. With its hardness and composition I might expect it to act more like stone than steel. Maybe a 50k diamond soft bonded water cooled wheel. Or cerium oxide on hard leather or hardwood? Lots of ideas ...

Birdseye Maple CNC Scales

Trying something new and I'm really happy with how these turned out. This is fresh off the cnc with no finish. I need to figure out a tweak for the mounting pin holes since they came out slightly tapered but I can hardly wait to make a few more sets. 20240203_144951.jpg 20240203_145003.jpg 20240203_...
