Re: Help zdp189 or k390
ZDP-189 is a great steel, but k390 outperforms it in almost every way. Given a choice between the two, the only reasons to choose zdp is if you wish to be able to sharpen it on aluminum oxide based stones, or because you already have a bunch of k390 and want to try something new. Sorry if this has b...

Re: Why doesn't Spyderco use D2 in their Seki models?
Please no d2. Vg10, bd1n, or 14c28n are the way to go for budget steels.

Re: High Performance Delica Excitement
Hi guys, Sorry to rain on our parade, but I was just informed that the thin Delica cannot be ground in K390, so we're going to have to settle for VG-10. Which is probably OK for a better comparison with a standard Delica. :o sal This is only a minor disappointment. On the one hand everytime I sharp...

Re: Military sprint run with a different handle? :O
Sounds good to me Right? To offer a little more meat and potatoes: The Military blade is 4", the handle is 5.5". A lot of designs chase blade to handle ratio, or attempt to pack in as much blade into the handle as possible, approaching a 1:1 ratio. I am not advocating for that, but even s...

Military sprint run with a different handle? :O
Ok, time to get dragged in the comments. I love the Spyderco Military blade shape and dimensions. I think it's a close to perfect design. I would love to see it housed in a different handle... I know there are tons of diehard Military purists out there, but to me, the Military handle is bigger and b...

Re: High Performance Delica Excitement
100% yes. Can't wait to see how they execute this concept. I have no doubt they nail the high hollow grind. The question is how thin behind the edge they will go. If most Spydercos average around .020 bte at 15 dps, will they go .015? .010? I doubt they'd go much thinner, but ten thou would be aweso...

Re: Is Sal Glesser Irreplaceable?
Yes. It's pretty obvious and I don't want to be trite, but I think Sal, and his affect on the knife industry is one of a kind. The melty ergonomics, the Spydiehole, the infatuation with blade steel... Sal has been a humble visionary, and there will be a giant void left behind once he is gone.

I haven't acquired a Military yet. It's at the top of my list. S110v or s90v BBS are tempting, but I haven't quite pulled the trigger yet. A new sprint would get me

Re: Which steel, edge angle, grit finish and sharpness level are you carrying today?
Cruwear, 15ish dps, finished with a 3000 grit diamond plate, then a f2000 ocb venev, stropped on 3 micron and .5 micron Gunny Juice horsehide strops. Those are relatively high grit stones, they actually produce a more aggressive edge than I traditionally get from a my F800/F1200 ocb venevs. The f200...

Re: Most underappreciated steel?
S110V is known so much for its vanadium-fueled wear resistance that it is easy to overlook its very high stain resistance. That’s a combination not often found. Right?! Next to the nitrogen steels it is near the top of corrosion resistant stainless steels, has a working hardness in the mid 60's, an...

Re: Most underappreciated steel?
To all those saying none of the three options are underappreciated, I don't know if we're getting hung up on semantics, or are just viewing the question with a different scope. There is definitely a large swath of the knife community who view s110v and Maxamet as unusable garbage, not worth the trou...

I think s90v is well liked for the most part. It may be under used, but I don't think it is underappreciated.bearfacedkiller wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 1:57 pmIf S110V is under appreciated then what about its even less loved little brother S90V?

Re: Most underappreciated steel?
I chose 14c28n of the choices given. If it is run hard enough it will hold a very sharp edge for a while, but once that goes, it gets dull very fast, it seems. I like the steel, though. I think what hurts it is Kershaw uses it on a lot of their knives and some may feel that means it is inferior. It...

Most underappreciated steel?
Most underrated steel? I nominate s110v, Maxamet, and 14c28n. S110V offers the best combination of corrosion resistance and wear resistance on the market, yet largley has been shunned by way of internet misinformation and myth. There are legitimate preferential reasons to dislike s110v, but it is th...

Re: Has K390 "obsoleted" M4/REX45/HAP40?
No. Less wear resistance, greater toughness and edge stability, assuming all have been optimally heat treated. Those trade offs are a preference thing. One could argue k390 makes for a better folder steel, but those other steels aren't obsolete.
