Re: New Guy

Hello from Michigan. I just ordered my first Spyderco (Lil Native Compression Lock). Not a collector, (yet ?) just a user. Not sure I can add a lot to the forum, but if something comes up where I can add to the conversation, I’ll try. I have been reading a lot here lately and couldn’t help myself b...

Re: Do most of us need larger knives?

I don't know...to be honest, I probably don't need a knife with a blade over 3" but since when was this knife hobby about needs? :p I prefer a blade to be 3.5 to 4" long. I find a longer blade to be more versatile and useful for a wider range of tasks. As David said, better to have it and ...

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??

Advocate and Pacific Salt. I'm working late tonight, and had fun putting the Advocate through some hard use. Wood carving, lots of cardboard, some thick hard plastic banding, some copper wires. One of the first times I ever put that knife through its paces and it held up fine. The slim design create...

Re: Steels: Extreme Edge Strength

That video is a great example of what I'm talking about. The REX 45 edge seems to be a good deal stronger than the M4.

Re: REX45 vs. CPM 4V

A bit of random info. In Michael Christy's rex 45 video, someone commented that they rockwell tested their Para 2 rex 45 and got 66.5 hrc. This matches the number Sal mentioned a while back. Wow that is crazy! What is Spyderco S110V hardness typically ran at? So, Could we say that REX45 is kinda li...

Re: REX45 vs. CPM 4V

^^ that Delica wharnie is awesome, I’d second that recommendation. It is easy to get real sharp, but I don’t think it’s as tough as rex45. I see hap40 being compared more with M4, not rex45. I wonder how tough maxamet is to sharpen FWIW I have not found Maxamet particularly difficult to sharpen. It...

Re: Steels: Extreme Edge Strength

"Out of all the many steel options that Spyderco offers, which one would hold up best to, say, cutting open a tin can? Batoning through brass, aluminum, or even steel? How about twisting the edge in hard plastic?" This is a genuine question Of the above, only the last one (hard plastic) I...

Re: Steels: Extreme Edge Strength

Search “edge stability” and read Larrins article. This question isn’t easily answered, if it was all makers would be using the same steel with the same geometry. Also subjective terms like “extreme abuse” aren’t rigorous enough to comment on. No metal is indestructible, so there is some point where...

Also the Manix 2 Maxamet is a great deal at about $155. But I don’t think I want a Manix.

Where can you get the Manix Maxamet for $155?

Steels: Extreme Edge Strength

Question: what steel currently used by Spyderco has the highest degree of edge strength or stability? I'm not necessarily talking about "toughness", or the chipping-vs-rolling debate. I'm talking about the ability of an edge to resist any and all forms of deformation, even under extreme ab...

Nope. The only decent quality knives I own are Spyders. I have no desire at this time to try other brands.

Wow! Maxamet is amazing. That video was incredible.
Start using it. It's even more impressive in person. We've used Maxamet (Manix 2 LW) to cut through a braided steel cable, and it was still shaving sharp afterward.

Wait, what?!! Tell me you took a video!

What kind of cable was it?
