Jim, good test and video, thanks for the effort. I did pretty much the same test with this knife but got tired of cutting cardboard. Some wonder why cut wood as you did on these type of edge holding tests. Answer is that you can put side loads on the fine edge. Looks like you did this. Cardboard and...

Guys, I still have a ELMAX B&T in my kit. It is Rc58. This morning I re-sharpened to 15 dps and did a comparison with a K294 (A 11 like CPM 10V) blade sharpened the same angle. This blade is RC 64. I cut the same 3/4 rope as my other comparison run posted here with CPM S110V. I will just say the...

Hunter, yes I have seen the chart. I will say a couple of things and then think it is time for me to withdraw. I like CPM S30V and have been using if for a long time, probably some on here know my history with it. That said- in my experience it will and does not hold an edge better than 10V. The 10v...

Hunter, I am not ignoring your points. Or trying to counter them. I am simply trying to see if I can replicate the edge breakdown that seems to be a concern on the high alloy CPM steels with a small edge angle. I have not seen it in the past and did not see it just now when I did my quick test. Sure...

Sturat, I bet the new dendritic blade from Spyderco -- your design is a rope cutting monster. I have used David's blanks for Chef's and did some grinding and heat treating for Francine Martin for a while. Very aggressive steel. 57, 58 rc seemed to be the sweet spot. Grinds like butter. Phil

Huntergather, and other post--ers--or post-- ees . I need to add a little information. When I mentioned 20 per side I am talking about a thickness behind the edge or .004 to .006 in most cases. I am also sharpening by hand and eye so this is probably an average value. I just went up and made a plast...

Cliff, I am not saying that someone should not be allowed to criticize my work or anyone else. I am open to critical review every time I send a knife to someone. If my knife is not up to standard or fails in some way that will be all over the world in 10 minutes. In my own case I would never make a ...

Aprophis, are you kidding. Not trying to stir the pot? Give me a break! You asked Cliff to comment on my work. This was intended to smoke me out since I have been pretty silent on this whole issue. Ok so he did --and I did not see what he wrote before I made my post. However he is pretty much saying...

I have been working with the CPM steels for almost 20 years now, in fact Cliff has had one of my 10V knives for a long time. On this subject of edge stability I have followed the discussion on that for the last couple of years but really did not want to enter into a long discussion on the forums, ju...

Aprophis, appreciate your purchase, let me know how the South Fork works for you. Shunshi, good idea on the inner tube. As an option for a bit more grab on the G10, tape off the handle to blade joint and sand the handle with some 320 or 220 grit wet/dry paper. Use water or Windex to keep paper from ...

Surf Gringo, nice Dorado, --fish and chips-- Looks like Baja in the back ground. Dtoad, nice salmon, The South Fork works great as a boat knife and in a pinch you can fillet with it. Just cut down the lateral line and peel off both loins. Works nice for doing a cut plug on the herring. I like to use...

Hi all, i do remember that little knife. My target hardness on CPM s110V is 62/63. Most hit the high side. Yes it is partial tang. I got started doing that to save steel when S110v was in short supply and uncertain whether Crucible would make any more. The center spacer is G10 and handle is natural ...

Hi Sal and all, I made some fillet knives with 12C27 and some Chef's with AEBL and was satisfied with the performance for that application. The material I got was called "strip" or roll steel and it was only available at the time in thin thickness like 2.5 mm. It was a problem for me durin...

Just to get back to the original question and to put a little perspective on this discussion. The original poster asked what hardness to expect from a Spyderco CPMS110V production knife. This is all speculation but I am going to speculate based on my experience and what I know about this grade. It i...

The "departure" line is subtle. I had to get the light just right for it to show up on the photo I sent to Ankerson. The CPM S90V is also a slightly different color, sort of brassy. I think as people play with it more if it becomes available it can be etched to bring out the difference mor...

Ed, thanks for the history with Crucible, interesting. All I knew about it was I got a bar in the mail and an invitation to try it outl. I am finishing up a knife with it right now. I heat treated it like CPM S90v since to me I would rather have that grade's properties for wear resistance than make ...

Sal, and all, I did get a "sample" of the laminate or San Mai, not sure the right term at this point-- and had intended to get something made up for SHOT but got overcome by other projects. I saw what Ed Schempp did with it and it is unique and makes a striking blade. I really like the lin...

Aotea, This is an amazing review. Excellent feed back on the South Fork. I guess you could say based on your review that the South Fork is a steak knife you can use from the pasture to the plate. I agree on the sharpening. The best edge for me is one that has some bite to it. I like a Norton medium ...
