[img]https://i.imgur.com/DS3aSes.jpg[] Bought this for a song on the secondary market. Previous owner hit a large staple while cutting up cardboard and didn’t feel like fooling around so it became my project. Lost a lot of steel but it sharpened up nicely and has seen quite a bit of use. To my eye,...

Re: Only 1 CBN stone - what grit?
400 gives an excellent all-purpose edge. I carry a 180 diamond plate for reestablishing an apex on sorely neglected kitchen cutlery and a 400/800 CBN for refining the edge. I seldom use the 800 side, as 400 gives a more durable edge for kitchen work. (Cuts well for longer before needing service) I a...

If you're worried about whether the Sharpmaker triangle rods will "fit" your blade's serrations, then you're using it the wrong way. In fairness, there are knives, both folding and culinary, that use serrations too small to get inside the scallops with a Sharpmaker. I have a chintzy petty...

Re: Magnacut rust from pocket carry
Brad-blasted finishes seem ideal for holding paint, but inferior to almost all other finishes for resisting corrosion. Even a satin finish can be made more resistant by polishing. I did this on my two Spyderco knives with ZDP-189 blades and it helped a lot.

This is so cool. I’m in Denver, visiting Colorado for the first time since 2017, and an SFO pilgrimage is on the books.

Re: The Ignorance of Steel
I used to feel my edges losing their bite when progressing from brown to white SM rods. Now most of my PE folders get finished on the brown rods. My Galley-Vee has the 12” white rods and the 9” CBN rods from the Gauntlet. I’m not aware of brown cat eye rods that fit, would get them if I could. I rep...

Re: Sharp knives save lives
There was an episode with my fist dog, a very lively and energetic German Shepard, that I often think about and that to a large degree has affected my preferences and habits with regards to what and where/when I carry in company of animals. What's weird is that this episode is always playing in the...

Re: Sharp knives save lives
As long as we're telling stories about the benefit of sharp knives and dogs... About a year ago, a stray dog wandered into my apartment complex. He was old and clearly arthritic, and someone must have just dumped him off. I scooped him up and took him to a friend of mine who does animal rescue, and...

Re: If you had to choose only one…
I chose MagnaCut based on hearing about its properties, despite zero direct experience. I’m waiting to see it offered in a model I really want, a Caribbean Lightweight or a Stretch XL Salt. I can be patient, have plenty of excellent knives already. I’ve been using a Magnacut mule at work for a coup...

Silky https://silkysaws.com/folding-saws/ Silky makes what are possibly the best saws you can get. I don't know why Spyderco would need to get into that market. This. Edited to add: I just caught up on the thread. Sal also uses Silky saws, and I’m not at all surprised. They really are good tools. I...

Re: sal can we get some new Lil Matriarchs?
FFG SE reverse-S knives would be great, Salt even better. If there’s an Emerson Little Matriarch, H-2 might be a better choice because hollow grind leaves more mass in the spine for reliable deployment.

Re: A visual guide to Edge geometry vs Blade geometry
When I waved my FFG Endura it noticeably improved the performance in greenery and corrugated fiberboard, because cutting away the spine to form the hook reduced its thickness from 3 mm to 2 mm.

You can’t just put on an aftermarket lanyard hole! Seriously, though, they don’t bother me and I don’t personally use them. Lanyard holes are very important for some users, and I’m glad those users have them available.

i'm surprised that the se models went on sale on the spyderco site and are now sold out, but they haven't had pe versions on there for months. the pe versions aren't discontinued, so i'm curious as to why they aren't listed for sale anymore. Maybe they are selling off stock to clear inventory befor...

Re: Spyderco Caribbean on Sale
I hope that the Caribbean being discontinued is indicative of a revised version launching soon. Fundamentals of that model are great. I think the scales were unpopular and expensive to produce. Myself I’d love it with thinner blade stock and FRN scales. Everything else is beautiful about the design,...

The serrated leaf Caribbean is a great knife. Plus one on Salty’s scale mod, it’s both practical and beautiful.

Re: Edge Retention For a Vanilla Endura?
Your retention sounds about right. Cardboard is very abrasive, hard on edges. Sharpening with low grit at 30 degrees (or less) inclusive will help extend useful edge life in cardboard. Search for Vivi’s low-grit edges thread here, it’s eye opening.
