Somehow, I really wondered why they didn't use a long gun to take out the aliens. A good sniper would have made a big dent.

Re: Sci-fi series
Edgar Rice Burroughs was writing about other planets and world building before any of those mentioned so far. Great action adventure sci-fi stuff. I have greatly appreciated HG Wells and he is still worth reading. C.S. Lewis wrote Out of A Silent Planet, which I enjoyed. I have read as much Heinlei...

Re: Sharpmaker newbie - a little clarification on 30 vs 40 degrees
I sharpen freehand now but I used a sharpmaker for touch ups before. I used a rubber band on top of the rods to close up the angles somewhat.

Re: Sci-fi series
My recommendations are mostly going to be novels and a couple shows. I strongly second the Hyperion novels. Good worldbuilding, though the second volume was weaker imo. Dune is a must read in contemporary sci-fi. All 6 volumes are worth your time, and at least Paul of Dune (by his son based on draf...

Re: Sci-fi series
There are lots of suggestions for TV shows, but may I suggest some Sci Fi novels? (even though nobody asked) Dune is a good place to start, has huge world building themes with action, weird science, and bits of philosophy throughout. The Hyperion Cantos is much easier to read . Re: Why did you join?
I've always carried a knife since high school. Both my father and mother had farms and although we lived in the city, we were often brought there on weekends. I learned the value of a cutting tool early. Then someone gave me a CCC of a smith and wesson one hand opener with a pocket clip. It was a re...

Re: Martial Arts Experiences Discussion Thread
I am often asked if MMA is an effective Martial Art for street defense. My answer, MMA is a sport, based on fighting skills and tactics. As a sport it has rules which protect the participants from serious injury. Look for the list of all the things you are not allowed to do in the ring ... this lis...

Re: Martial Arts Experiences Discussion Thread
... Oh, I’m definitely not selling anyone short. Maybe I should have worded it as “not formally trained.” I’ve known several guys in my lifetime without any ‘formal’ training who could take out most black belt martial artists on the street or in a bar (or wherever). Maybe not in a dojo or competiti...

Re: Martial Arts Experiences Discussion Thread
One thing I can say about criminal or wannabe criminal elements. The assumption that these people are untrained can be deadly. They probably have not been trained in any formal sense but believe me when I say, they will probably have at least some experience in fighting. Additionally, these people h...

Re: Anyone a HAM Radio Operator?
... And writing all this makes me realize I should really go ahead and upgrade my license. I've passed the general class written tests before, but couldn't pass the morse test. But the morse requirement was dropped years ago, so really the only thing that's keeping me from upgrading is sloth. :) Yo...

I am actually. Extra class. Some countries have dropped the morse code requirements but we still have them in the Philippines for extra class. I've been on and off with radios since high school. My call sign is DU7DVE. Each licensed ham radio operator has a call sign unique in the world. For anyone ...
